high school course requirement for admissions are usually
4 units of english
3 units of math
3 units of science
3 units of social studies
2 units of foreign languages

what exactly is units? is it same thing as credits? or is it years?

I did night school in order to get more credits. I took 1 credit at school and 1 credit at night school, total of 2 credits in a same year. Does this count as 2 units? or since it is just 1 year, is it 1 unit? I am so confused.

When they say, for example, 4 units of English they are referring to four years of high school English (1/2 unit per semester). If you take a course at night for two semesters that equals 1 unit for that course you took at night.

So…since I took 2 semesters of chemistry that equals 1 unit at the nightschool, and took 2 semesters of biology at my school that equals 1 unit, those count as 2 units for science right? so it means that I only have to take 1 more year of science right? I was wondering about this because I heard that 1 unit = 1 year. I perceived as you have to have 3 years of science even if you satisfy 3 credits in 2 years.

This is a very old thread to which you have responded. Just note that the “at least” comment on in the link you provide is referring to the group listing that follows it not specifically to English; i.e., it is telling you it expects at a minimum that you have the combination of four years of English, four of math, two of foreign language, two science, and one social science and by “at least” it means that combination of 13 units. It then recommends that you have more than that total (which could be more foreign language, more science, or more social studies).

Nevertheless, it is possible to have more than four units of English, e.g., someone may take three years of English and then AP Literature and AP English Language and Composition in senior year.
