High school golf

So I'll be entering high school this coming year, and I'll play on the girls team. The last time I played on regulation, I didn't do too well. And in middle school, we played on par 3 courses, so how many strokes is average for high school girls? How many strokes do you CCers take? And any advice for high school golf?

bumpity bump?

This may be because I live in a bad state, but here, qualifying is REALLLY high. At most tournaments I competed in (varsity girls) the qualifying score was 96. I don’t really have any tips… I guess just practice? xD

Don’t neglect practice or else you’ll go from shooting in the 80’s to the 90’s like me LOL.

But yeah, you can’t really do anything besides practice. If you practice, you’ll get better. Play at different courses to get a feel for the greens, and make sure to practice your short game. Of course, distance matters (in 8th grade, aka when I was 12, my DRIVER went 100 yards so yeahhh…), but short game is where it really counts. Practice your short game and you’ll save yourself so many strokes.

I don’t think there is an average. My school does not offer golf as a sport (only as a club, that has like four people who don’t know how to play), so I golf through a program called The First Tee. I agree with gomdorri, practice, practice, practice. If you have your own clubs practice putting and chipping in your backyard and going to a driving range will help you improve your shots that need drivers and irons.

Yeah. There isn’t really an average. There is just a benchmark for qualifying. I’d practice enough to shoot in the low 90’s at least, if you want to go to state. I don’t think there is an average, but there are people who range in … “skill” for lack of better words. Some people here win state with 74’s on par 72 courses, some get 3 legs for state, go, and end up shooting 120s. Scores are all over the place lol.

And @artsygirl same here. We have a “varsity team”, but it’s more like a club than a team. The coach also coaches the boys, and doesn’t really care about us so basically our practice is going to the golf course whenever we want and however we want ROFL. There are only two girls on the “team” (you need 4 to qualify for state) INCLUDING me, so yeah.

Practice a lot. If you’re lazy like me and don’t like having to go alll the way to the golf course, practice at home. I got my parents to grow a little patch of grass in our backyard so I chip there, and then I put inside the house on the carpet. At first, don’t try to go for distance. Go for accuracy. Hit all of your balls straight, and THEN work on distance and getting to the green. After you think you can make the ball where you want it to go (back when I had a really bad draw, I was shooting in the mid 125’s rofl), practice on short game. Get comfortable with 1/2 putting, avoid 3 putts, etc.

Good luck EveningSwan in your upcoming high school golf season! My daughter will be a sophomore this fall. She absolutely loved playing high school golf her freshman year! She wants to play golf in college so she has worked very hard and progressed from shooting in the 115 to 120 range in her first summer 18 hole tournaments 3 years ago to shooting in the mid 70s to mid 80s this summer. If you are serious about competing, my best advice is to get lessons and then practice what you are taught so you develop sound technique. Artsygirl13 mentioned the First Tee. We have a local chapter in our area that offers very affordable group lessons. Also PlayGolfAmerica.com is a great resource for information - - some golf courses even offer free lesson days – you can put in your zip code and it will list junior programs or lessons near you. Private lessons with a PGA professional who specializes with juniors and who you are comfortable with would be ideal if it’s in the budget. Even though my daughter’s high school golf coach is very knowledgeable and active in junior golf, practice sessions with the team are not the same as the lessons she gets from her swing coach who is a PGA professional. Have fun! Golf is a awesome sport!

Thanks for the advice! Our school doesn’t split varsity with junior varsity so I’ll be playing with juniors and seniors. I’ve been reading so many books on golf and watching the PGA Tour which has really helped my short game. It’s just my iron shots that I can’t seem to fix which brings me the most trouble. I can drive pretty far ( almost 200 yds ), but I can take sooooo many iron shots.

^So you’re trying out for varsity? At our school, there’s no Girls Varsity Golf Team, just co-ed, but there is a Girls Golf Team that plays just for fun that I’ll probably be joining!!

To make Varsity at my school you need to be able to break around 80 for guys and 90 for girls.

If our school had jv and varsity, there would be like three girls on each team. But in my class, there’s like ten girls trying out for golf this fall, so I want to distinguish myself from the others. I think I also forgot to mention that there aren’t any cuts, so everyone makes the team.
