I’m currently a junior at a competitive public high school. For the past 3 years, I have been taking mostly STEM courses up to calculus 2, AP bio, chem, and organic chem. I thought I wanted to major in Biology and eventually go to med school. However, I have realized that I do not excel in these topics at the level needed to become a surgeon. For example, I do not understand the concepts as fast as I should and my AP test scores have been very undesirable. As a result, I have become very discouraged. Recently, I have taken an interest in more artistic topics like interior design and renaissance art. The problem is that I have no art courses on my transcript except for a credit of orchestra from freshman year. I know that interior design is offered at art schools but I practically have no idea how to get in without art classes or a portfolio. What do I do?
I would see if you could potentially take lessons with an outside teacher to create a portfolio and see if there are courses on Coursera and other online websites. If there is an art teacher at your school, you could also seek advice from them and see can point you in the right direction. You could possibly even take a class with them next year/semester depending on how your school year works.
Interior design is offered widely, not just at art schools: https://www.accredit-id.org/accredited-programs
So are other kinds of art majors.
But you probably do want to take art courses as soon as you can to help determine your interest.
