Sup guys, I just graduated from middle school and I’ll be attending 9th grade next year. Here are the math courses that my high school offers (that I haven’t taken yet but I want to): Algebra 2, Precalc with Trig, AP Calculus BC, Multi Variable Calc (Semester), Matrix Algebra (Semester), AP Statistics, and AP Computer Science A. It doesn’t take a mathematician to see that these add up to 6 years of high school courses. After spending about a month working on teaching myself algebra 2, I’ve found that I’ve gotten almost perfect score on every practice SOL that I could find (about 2-3 incorrect) which is equivalent to an advanced pass. So, I’ve decided to skip Algebra 2, however there is still one more course I need to teach myself. So, do you think I should teach myself precalc with trig for the remaining month and a half of summer break, or should I take a summer course for AP Statistics sometime during my high school life?
Have you taken Algebra I and Geometry yet? If you’re going to be a freshmen, why not go Algebra II, Pre-Calc w/ Trig, AP Calc BC, and then Multi Variable Calc (Semester) & Matrix Algebra (Semester). That gets you 4 years of math and those classes are looked highly upon. You don’t need to take every single math class your school offers. If you really want to take AP Stats, take it over the summer or self-study. Its a useful course but most people take it right after Algebra II.
Yes, I got a perfect score on both my Geometry and Algebra SOL’s + Finals. I’m not doing this because of some anxiety towards a college that I’ll attend in the future, I’m doing this because I simply LOVE attending math classes. I’ve even been reading advanced calc books every night before I go to sleep. Math, unlike reading and writing, just comes so easy to me because I make up for my horrendous memory with a purely unrivaled sense of logic.
Well, is Computer Science a must take class for you? If not, the above sequence I posted would work absolutely fine. I can tell you enjoy math!
The above sequence totally works. I may just be able to take the Computer Science AP Exam without the need of taking the class anyways. I plan on majoring in Comp. Science and Engineering alongside Business Management. So I’ve already been taking Comp. Science as a hobby and after taking a quick look on some of the past AP Exams, I can tell it’ll be a breeze. I’ll be registering for my classes tomorrow. I may be able to just co-req for two years and not skip any more courses; hopefully everything will go according to plan
Yeah I think you would be fine with self-studying for CS! Best of luck to you!
Does your school make you take a test to make sure you’ve their standards and/or make you register for the course?
I would recommend taking PreCalc/Trig over the school year; it’s a good review for Calc and will cover whatever wasn’t covered in Algebra 2. AP Stat should be fine over next summer, but you can take it anytime after Algebra 2, or concurrently with any math class after Algebra 2 (PreCalc w/Trig & AP Stat, AP Calc AB & AP Stat, AP Clac BC & AP Stat, etc) since AP Stat is more of an off-sequence math course.
Excellent! I never thought about doing a co-req because my school offers about 20 interesting ap courses and I just can’t help the feeling of taking all of them!
Haha
You might have to check with your school or see if your older friends/siblings have done the same thing to see if it’s possible though.
If your school offers these courses, they have a plan in place for students to take them without skipping anything. I would recommend something like this:
Freshman
Algebra 2
Sophomore
Precalc with Trig
AP Statistics
Junior
AP Calculus BC
Senior
Multi Variable Calc (Semester)
Matrix Algebra (Semester)
AP Computer Science A
