I was wondering if anyone had any tips for staying organized in high school. This year, I plan on using one big binder for all of my classes. Is this a good idea?
If you’re taking AP classes, I would recommend using something separate for that specific class (like a notebook or another binder). However, if you’re taking standard and honors classes, a large (2.5" or 3") binder would be perfect for all your classes. Just make sure that you regularly file things into the correct tabs, because if you’re lazy and over stuff the pockets, your binder’s gonna start tearing.
I’m going into freshman year, so I don’t have any personal experience about school supplies in high school, but I have heard that binders tend to get heavy and then flipping through them is a real pain. I’ve been advised to stick to folders and notebooks for the most part. Try note-binders, they’re lighter and have many folders in the tabs.

I highly recommend the book “That Crumpled piece of paper was due last week” for organizational tips. Everything from organizing your time to your papers… I believe they recommend one binder that comes to school but that is emptied into separate ones (by subject ) at home on a weekly basis. I bought a planner and it’s really been helping me! Also, color code your notebooks and folders if possible.
Its been a year so I don’t remember fully, but I think what I did was use one 1.5 inch notebinder for every class where the teacher didn’t require special materials (eg. a specific notebook or a folder or a specific binder (then I would use a 1 inch notebinder). I’d write my notes on loose leaf paper and keep them in the rings along with important reference papers. Assignments and stuff I would keep in the divider’s folders. I would clear stuff out into an accordion folder I kept at home once I no longer needed to carry it around.
It really depends on the structure of the class though.
I would suggest 2 Note Binders…either one for A days and B days or for morning and afternoon.
If you get too much papers to carry in them then get some regular binders you leave at home to put the stuff in.
I haven’t been in high school yet, but I wouldn’t recommend using one binder for everything. What happens if you lose it? Also, you will accumulate so many papers that it will become unmanagable.
