High School schedule

Hi! I am an upcoming sophomore! At my school we plan out our schedules for all 4 years of high school when we are in 9th grade. I made alterations to the original schedule to fit my current plans and I was wondering if some people could look at the schedule and tell me if the course load seems to light and if these classes could get me into a top 20/25 school. I know acceptance to a top school isn’t just based on classes but I would like to know if these classes match up with most students applying to top schools.

9th Grade
Spanish 1
Pre-AP Geometry
Career Prep
Pre-AP World History (1500s - to present)
Pre-AP Biology
Pre-AP English 9
Concert Band
Marching band

The first semester of my 9th grade year I slacked off and made 2 C’s for the 2nd 9 weeks. I was able to recover and have all A’s And 2 B’s for the semester(so the C is not on my transcript). I made All A’s the 2nd semester. I ended up with all 95+ except for Spanish(87) and English (89) for the year.

I didn’t understand the seriousness of high school till the 2nd semester. If I try I should be able to make A’s in my classes for the rest of high school.

10th Grade
Spanish 2
Pre-AP Algebra 2 W/Trig
Foundations of Heath Science
Pre-AP U.S. History 1
Pre-AP Chemistry
Pre-AP English 10

Marching Band

11th Grade
Spanish 3
Pre-AP Pre-Cal.

  • Pre-AP is my HS’s version of honors classes.
  • students can not take AP classes till 11th grade.

You are missing physics which top colleges will look for. In general CNA class isn’t considered a rigourous academic class but more of a vocational class. I would talk to your guidance to see what they say about that.

Agree with the above, you need to work in physics somewhere. It doesn’t need to be AP but the competitive schools want to see bio, chem, physics and then at least one of them being AP.
I would drop 11th grade medical terminology/math and take honors physics in its place.

I agree. You need physics - even regular physics, but preferably pre Ap physics or Physics 1. Why not drop marching band since you’re already in concert band?

@MYOS1634

My school doesn’t offer ANY physics classes(dropped the class 2 years ago because they didn’t have enough students taking it to fill a class), and marching band is an after school class.

Ask your GC how you can find a physics class. (You must have taken physics in HS for a step major at most selective universities and since it looks like you want to be pre-med it’s a pre-requisite).

If you will be a pre-med or biology major in college, you will need to take physics in college. Although many colleges offer an easier physics for biology majors courses, it will be competitive to earn A grades that pre-meds need, and students who have not had physics in high school will be at a disadvantage when taking physics in college.

Do you have access to a community college nearby where you can take a Physics class? That’s possibly a better option that trying to take a Physics class online and having to deal with labs. I’ll assume that Marching Band is only a Fall activity so that you could take this class after school in the Spring of your 11th grade. (Your 12th grade schedule looks pretty full to me). You many need to take a test to see if you are qualified to take Physics at a community college.

@ProfessorPlum168 the only physics class the community college teaches is physics with Calculus. I wouldn’t be taking a calculus class till 12th grade.

^ that can’t be true. If they offer physics for Calculus (ie , for engineers) they ought to offer the more traditional algebra-based physics class for all other majors. Email the chair of the physics department and ask politely (Dear Professor Z, My name is … and I am a high school student who’d like to take an introduction to physics class. Does the college offer conceptual physics or algebra-based physics? Thank you. Sincerely, … …)
