Right now as a sophomore, I am lacking in extracurriculars. I currently only have 3- I am on the yearbook committee, I am a competitive dancer, and I hold an officer position in Key Club. What extracurriculars do colleges (namely UC’s) look for? My GPA is pretty good but not the best, so I figure being involved in more activities will improve my resume. Lately I’ve been stressing over what clubs I should join, what I should do over the summer, how to be more involved, etc. so any suggestions would be helpful.
Volunteer. Colleges love to see community service and you can find a place to volunteer at that you are passionate about. For example, I like animals so I am volunteering at a local animal shelter. Also, you can get a job if you are old enough. This will give you some work experience that not only can you put on you resume, but will help you learn skills like communicating. It seems like you have a fairly strong EC base so just try to add on that. As for your GPA are you taking any higher level courses like APs?
I do volunteer quite often and I am getting a job this summer. And yes, I am currently taking AP World and next year i will have three AP’s.
Quality over quantity. Colleges don’t look for the person with a million EC’S, but the one with the most meaningful. If you’re in Key Club, instead of just being an officer, be an international board member. For competitive dance, you could try placing in large, ranked competitions. And of course, join an EC in an area you want to study. If you want to do STEM, but have no STEM EC’s, that won’t look great. Just make sure you leave enough time to get your GPA up.
I’ll second @Dax123 here. Colleges want to see your passions and commitment to activities, not a multitude of extracurriculars that will ‘boost’ a resume. Dedicate yourself into all three of your extracurriculars and you’ll be good to go, honestly! Get leadership positions and immerse yourself completely in all activities you’re taking part in!
Good luck! I’m also a sophomore
