Was there ANYONE out there who was admitted to CalTech who participated in school sports or music as their main extracurricular instead of a science club ect. ?

Here is what the Caltech admissions site says

What they are looking for is passion for math and science.
Most Techers have other interests and many are very good at it, but that is not what drives them. So, if Music or sports is your primary focus and you cannot demonstrate your passion for math and science in some way or the other, then Caltech admission will be very difficult.

Participated in music/sports: Definitely. I’d say 80% have participated in one of these activities.

Their MAIN activity being music/sports: I’d bet a few but you’d still have to show a passion for math/science in something that might not be an EC per say, like an olympiad or in your essays.

There are definitely some who participated in sports as a main EC. But you must also show your passion for math/science. My child was a varsity athlete in high school, but also participated in science EC’s.

Personally, my main activities all through high school were music. Band, Wind Ensemble, orchestra, private lessons in two instruments, public solo performances, etc. I even considered music as my potential career. Then, I saw the struggles my music teachers were going through just to keep a lousy paying job, and looked elsewhere. Music is still VERY important in my life, just not my future career. I am playing two instruments now at Caltech, and enjoy my goups here tremendously!! But, it is a side-line, not my major (duh…).

Thanks! Thats kinda what my situation is like. I have sports and orchestra which tend to suck up my time : )
But I do certainly have a passion for science and math and reflect it through my day to day life. Guess my essays will have to be excellent.
