High School Summer Scholars Program?

Not sure if this is the right place to post this, but I just got into the summer scholars program, and had a couple of questions about the program.

  1. What is the dorm situation? What type of rooms are available, and how are roommates chosen?
  2. What was the overall experiences of the summer program? Did you find the difficulty of the courses too overbearing?

Hi! I did the High School Summer Scholars program last year, and it was a great experience! To answer you questions…:

  1. The dorms were co-ed. There is a strict curfew and no gender mixing at all in rooms. Most rooms were suites where you had two doubles connected by a shared bathroom with two sinks, a shower, and a stall bathroom. Each double room had two beds, two desks, two dressers, and two closets. Other rooms were just basically 1.5 double rooms merged together into a single room with a connecting bathroom that were for trios. Compared to my siblings’ dorms at Uni. of ND and Ohio State, the dorms were quite roomy. The mattresses are amazing!! They’re Tempurpedic. I was in Dardick, so things may be different for you depending on what residence hall they assign students into this year.

Roommates are assigned. You’ll get a survey asking about your living style and different attributes for who you want to room with and if you need any special accommodations. They make sure to diversify (racially, location-wise, etc) each room which is nice.

  1. I loved it!! I still am in touch with friends I made last year. The RAs really do try their best to make this experience great for you. Some RAs even baked cookies for students that felt homesick. I only did two workshops and once course because I was worn down from my spring semester, and the workload was very much bearable, though finals week can be a bit tough. One of my classes gave us a day to write four essays… I wrote for 12 hours straight to create four essays totaling to 15 pages. But I passed! Anyway, enough with my tangent and anecdotes. Some students did drop their second course if they did two harder courses and a workshop, but the RAs are really good at checking in with each student to see how they were doing. Tutoring was offered too.

If you have any questions or need suggestions of places to hang out or if you need any more information, feel free to reach out to me!

When you’re there, try Ted Drewes Frozen Custard!! It’s a must if you’re in St. Louis. Their cement ice cream is most famous. Try to do some of the excursions while you’re there too. The Botanical Garden is beautiful, Shakespeare in the Park was entertaining, and the St. Louis zoo is free! Though they may make you walk about 30 minutes there like they made us… Six Flags is a must too.
