Hssp

Did anyone go to the High School Summer Scholars program last year? If so how was it and did you like. Does it help you chances at all to get into Washu, meaning does it show strong interest?

yeah, I actually had the same question...are you thinking of going this year?

Yeah I actually applied, I do not know if I got in yet but i think it would be an awesome experience since washu is my first choice for school. I could see what the classes are really like and what life is like at washu. Are you planning on going this year?

definitely. From all that I've heard, it sounds amazing.

Good luck!

I can't wait for hssp this year...I was also wondering if the program affected admission since washu is my #1 choice right now. Hope to see you guys this summer!

did you get in?

Last thursday I emailed the director of the program asking her if they received my application. She emailed me back saying that my application has been read and accepted and that my acceptance package was on its way. I was beyond excited...the program must of not been too selective if they let me in lol

Congratulations!

Thanks! Are you going to HSSP this year?

Definitely -- it sounds amazing. What courses do you want to take?

I participated in the HSSP program last year. It was an amazing experience, but I would not count on it to improve your chances of admission. Out of 70 people in my session I only know of 5 who were accepted, 10 who were rejected, and the others were wait listed.

Well I guess the program can't hurt. The program sounds perfect for me so I can't wait to attend. I'm probably going to take some kind of language course and an art history class. tkdpainkiller- what session are you going to? I'm going to session 1 since our schools start so early here in georgia. I wonder what the acceptance rate for hssp is...can't be too low since they accepted me!

I'm definitely going to session 1, but if I can I might try to do 2 as well (if it's even allowed). The biggest reason is that I want to take Physics I and II (my school doesn't have very good physics classes!).

I'd be interested to know what the acceptance rate is, too. I guess it probably wouldn't be right to ask the director or any of the admissions people, but maybe one of the RA's would know...

I can't see why they wouldn't let you register for two sessions, more money for WUSTL! Its awesome that I'll already know someone at HSSP before attending! I'm somewhat worried about taking Second Year French at HSSP since the class is three hours long, five days a week and the fact that my so-called "AP" French class consists of little more than watching French movies and eating Nutella. I KNOW there has to be more people than just us going to HSSP...

Just to ease your worries about taking French 2: I took this class last year at HSSP (I loved it!) and was worried about how prepared I was. The class was basic French grammar and vocab (high school French 2 or 3). It was great to review concepts and practice speaking in a small class setting. There were 6 students in my class, 4 HSSP and 2 college students taking for credit (one from Wash U and one from Columbia). Our experience levels ranged but everyone did well and our professor was amazing (he was a native French speaker). I also had the added bonus of having two French speaking HSSP friends.

The point is it was an incredible experience and you should not be worried about your ability to handle the class.

Bon chance!

I got accepted today. Are most people going to session 1 or session 2? Also, is anyone here going to be taking chemistry?

Congrats manjaap!

I'm going to Session 1 since my school year starts early, but I'm sure there are plenty of people attending Session 2 as well. Chemistry? Not a chance! LOL...I still have nightmares about taking chemistry last year. ::shivers::

Thanks for the French 2 advice denali04! I feel much more relaxed about taking the course now. French 2 it is!

hey I did HSSP last year, and it was AMAZING. it was the best summer of my life, i wouldn't change it for a thing. you really get to meet amazing people and take college courses and learn what college is really like. you have freedom to do whatever you want, but still have some group activities as well. I would recommend it to anyone that is interested.

It is quite selective, the RAs told me that they choose about half the people that applied.

second, i think it defintely does help your chances of getting in! that's what all teh RAs said, especially if you do well in the courses that you took. also, i got a rec from my professor there and that REALLY helped me get in, i think. out of the people that i know, alot of people got accepted early, but overall i think about 15 people got accepted, as far as i know. alot of people got waitlisted, and i know of only one rejection as of now.

also, chemistry and physics are the hardest courses there, i know of a few peopel who failed it last summer. and it sucks because students taking those classes can take those courses ONLY. i think it was the hardest courses. but if you are interested go for it! just make sure that you wont' tire yourself out too much through the classes, you also have to have fun!

good luck!!! i'm sure you guys will love it! if you guys have any othe questions just ask me! :)

From what I've heard so far, HSSP sounds amazing. I'm already counting down the days until it begins. mjinsoo- What kind of weekend trips did you guys get to go on? How were the dorms and the food? Thanks in advance!

The weekend trips, well you have the opportunity to go on somethign that is sponsored by teh program, or just have fun on your own. we went to fair st.louis--that was for the fourth of july (session 1) and we got to see the arch then. That night there was a huge concert featuring black eyed peas, switchfoot etc. it was great. every weekend you can go to The Loop, it's a university city street where they have alot of differnet restaurants and shops and you can just chill there. One of the music stores there--vintage vinyl, held a concert by Jason Mraz and we saw him there. we had a cardinals game one weekend, and the other we were supposed to go to the six flags but it started thundering and pouring so we ended up at the mills, this huge mall that had go karting, glow int he dark mini golf and huge cheap stores. i'm tryign to remember; the thing is, it's not really the weekend trips that make the program exciting, it's really the everyday things. alot of times you'll find yourself sleeping at around 2 becuase you finish your work, then just hang out with friends until the next day. there are always random sponsored nights during the weekdays, liek pizza night, mafia night, free movie thursdays (where you go to galleria and watch a movie for free with your washu card), then even had self defense class, and belly dancing! everythign will just come together, and it's all so amazing you can't name everything at all! :)

as for the dorms, we stayed in forsyth last year. that's one of the new dorms, so the rooms were really spacious and we shared a nice big bathroom with a suitemate. chances are that you'll get a new dorm as well, i think. males/females were divided by floor, and the rooms were awesome. on the first floor, there was a huge flat screen, and a bunch of couches, so we could watch tv or dvds anytime. a group of guys never left that room and even slept there, that's how amazing it is! there is a computer lab in the building so that was really useful. study rooms, community rooms, kitchens, and quiet rooms were all available each floor. the dorms really were great! I think each floor really bonds well together so that helped the social scene.

The food, i think is one of the greatest things at washu. you'll mostly eat at Bear's Den, and the people there are incredibly nice and courteous. The food is INCREDIBLE!! i loved it. they have anythign you'd like: pasta section, great mexican food, chicken, shrimp, steak, salmon, fries, pizza, fruit & salad section, break, yogurt, cereal chips etc, and they were all sooo good. i actually miss the food there becuase there's no place like it!!! They also have cafeterias near where you study. and in the library they have whispers cafe which is where alot of kids hang out between classes. they sell coffee, bread, salad etc. there's also a bakery which most people went to in the morning and they sell smoothies, and soft ice cream. it was great!!! oh, and we ordered chinese and mexican food soemtimes. you should DEFINITELY order Casa Dilla's, their quesadillas are AMAZING!!! (but i must warn you they are quite big!)

i think you shouldn't worry at all, you are gonna have soo much fun! and if you're going to session 1, chances are that I'm gonna see you because I'm doing teh Freshman Summer Academic Program and the dates overlap! :)
