high score, low percentile?

I got my SAT II Chem test score back a couple weeks ago. I was excited to see that I had broken the 700 barrier and had gotten a 710 but then I looked at the percentile. 72nd percentile? That sucks!

Do colleges consider percentiles? I'm trying to get into an accelerated medical program, and since their average matriculants generally have 750+ on everything, I'm sorta worried.

From what I've heard colleges don't really look at percentiles because not as many people take the SAT IIs as they do the SAT I, so the percentiles aren't comparable like they are on the SAT I.

As an example of why not to take the percentiles too seriously, an 800 on math IIC has been as low as the 88th percentile.

p.s. If you want a more fluent explanation, read the bottom of this page http://www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/sat/scores/understanding/percentiles.html

Yeah, no one really gives a crap about percentiles. Sometimes I wonder if the people on CC look for more things to freak out about...
