I just noticed on the naviance (website that tells you the stats of kids admitted to colleges from your school) that the average gpa of the people accepted early decision is a lot higher than the average gpa of the regular decision admits. this makes no sense to me, I thought that the ED admits would have an average of a lower gpa than the regular since its easier to get in ed.

Perhaps people with higher GPA’s are more well-informed and likely to be aware of ED and its advantages.

ooh good one lockn.
I think you are right, but I also think alot of kids apply ED w/lower GPAs and are accepted as they are sure shots…and some are also athletic recruits…not that all athletic students have lower GPAs but some do and are valued for other attributes they can bring to a school.

what college are you referring to? that may influence…

I’ve heard some college admissions officers say the apparent statistical advantage of applying ED is mainly illusory because the ED pool is stronger than the RD pool. So that, for example, a candidate with a 3.9 GPA and 1500 SAT CR + M has exactly the same chance of being admitted ED as RD; it’s just that the larger RD pool contains more candidates with weaker credentials, so the apparent odds of being accepted look lower.

But I don’t know if that’s true at every school, especially because I’ve heard some college admissions officers say that applying ED does give the applicant a slight edge, if only because the school has more slots to fill and is drawing from a smaller pool at the ED stage.

Then you also hear the old canard that at elite schools a very large fraction of ED admits are recruited athletes, which presumably would pull down the statistical profile of ED admits as a whole. I’ve never seen actual confirmation of that, however.

It makes no sense for top schools but may make sense for some others.

At the top schools you post about boopboop, the majority of ED admits are hooked: athletes, legacies, staff kids, development, etc. At your first choice school, over 35% of ED admits are athletes alone. Trust me, on average their GPA’s are a lot lower than they unhooked admit.

The average stats of the unhooked would be higher, but not of the ED group as a whole.

Take a look at the number of who applied ED and who didn’t, and then look at the acceptances.

more kids admitted reg decision
