I was wondering if Berkeley had Hindi or Tamil classes and if they were available to be taken during the summer since my 4 year plan is booked for fall and spring classes. I'd Hindu (religion) so I've always been embarrassed that the only language I know fluently is English and I took lots of Spanish in High school, especially since my parents know Hindi and Tamil but they never taught me. Would these classes count towards my humanities requirements?

Wow. I just typed a long message to you and it didn’t get sent. : / Basically, I said my friend doesn’t know how to speak hindi either and his parents do. So you’re not alone! : ] Yes they do offer Hindi at Berkeley! go to google and type “schedule berkeley” to see when it is offered. It is not offered in short sessions over the summer, like session D because there is not enough time to present the material or for you to study it all.

ahh I see thank you, that’s kinda disappoint that they don’t have it over the summer but it’s still nice to know they have that class there. thank!

South and Southeast Asian studies offer several South and Southeast Asian languages.

They have Hindi, Urdu, Bengali, Indonesian, Khmer, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Tagalog, Tamil, Thai, and Vietnamese. I think they are starting Telegu too. Normally, they offer a Hindi-Urdu 15 course in the summer, which is 10 units and equal to the first two semesters of Hindi.

I just looked it up and they do have “Intensive Elementary Hindi-Urdu” over the summer but it’s only offered in Session C, so yes, they have it over the summer but you’d have to go to that specific session.

thank you!
