I will be taking Comp Sci 61A, Physics 7A, and Math 53 this coming semester for a letter grade along with a 1 unit seminar pass/fail class, and I was wondering if I'd have the time to also do Hindi 1A (I'd be doing it pass/fail so GPA won't matter). Thank you all who respond!

PS: I pretty much don't know any Hindi at all (even though my parents are Indian...).

It should be manageable, just barely with those three other technical courses. Language classes in Berkeley are so intense… (along with math, and physics, and chemistry, and CS, and, and, and…)

kk thanks you guys I appreciate it! (yeah my grandparents on both sides of my family are from India and they are Hindu by religion but they moved to Malaysia, where my parents were born) so I guess that makes me Malaysian-Indian American? (racial demographics can get so complex lol), but yeah thanks I’m taking it pass/fail and if they grade leniently I’m sure I should be able to pass it without too much effort and be able to focus on my technical classes. I really want to learn Hindi since a Malaysian-Indian American who can speak Spanish and English but not Hindi seems kinda odd to me lol and I want to be able to watch Hindi movies without subtitles…(lol I know weird reason to want to learn a language).

1A is not bad at all, but I have heard complaints from friends last semester that 1B was completely terrible. The professor is nice but very biased and her tests are difficult. I think she grades purely based on whether she likes you or not lol

Hey Diivio, I’ll be taking almost the same courseload next semester (substitute physics 7A for 8B, and compsci for mcb 112). How did hindi 1A turn out? I’m worried it’ll take a lot of time from studying for my technical classes (just looking at all the hindi characters gives me goosebumps, they all look the same and there are different characters for sounds that sound almost the same to my ear). If anybody else took hindi 1A, how was it and how much hours on average a week did it take to study for it?

Edit: Forgot to add, how much better can you speak or understand hindi now that you took the class? Can you watch hindi movies without subtitles?

^^ not a bad class. i took Hindi 1A with Huetteman and pulled off an A-. she’s an intense lady though lol.

she likes giving out 100s of words and expects them to be memorized instantaneously. i decided to not take 1b after that haha…the grammar and script are not so bad…its learning the virtually arbitrary system of assigning male/female genders to things like chairs and foods that gets crazy after a bit.

i did understand basic conversation when i was originally learning, but thats all gone to hell now since its been almost a year lol

But now, after a year, can you still read hindi and can you understand hindi movies (if you watch them). I don’t really wanna take it if I’m gonna forget it, lol, as your post made it seem. They speak really fast lol. How much homework did she give (and how much actual time did she give to memorize those 100 word lists lol)? And is there a disadvantage (curve-wise) to not knowing hindi already?

lol i was not a native speaker and i did ok. there’s a lot of indians who dont speak hindi and even non-Indians too so you should be ok…

if anything, she favors those who dont know Hindi already…

i can still read/write the scripts and i can form basic sentences, but i have def forgotten the more advanced structures we sort of crammed.

it was annoying b/c she spent a lot of time going over the script for like 3 weeks (which is really easy after you practice once or twice) and then towards the ned she realized we were behind schedule and freaked out and taught us like 5 different structures all of the sudden. the average grade is like a B+ (and there is no curve) and homework isnt too bad. i would do it every morning right before class while i was at work. she does grade for accuracy though so you cant just turn something in and expect to be given credit.

my parents like to use only Hindi to communicate with me. Thanks to their insistence, I can watch Hindi movies without the subtitles!! And communicate quite effectively…but ya know, whatevs.

I still feel awkward speaking it with an American accent though ><

sorry to bump up this thread, but how hard is Hindi 1a if I do not know how to write hindi, but have excellent speaking and understanding ability?
