"Hippie schools"

St John's College, I don't think they are culturely diverse though

lol kinasha
when my D worked as riding staff on a camp on vashon island, they used to shave designs in their leg hair-- can't imagine her selling cosmetics although she does wear some occasionally :)

we did see more caucasian kids with dreads playing hackysack at Evergreen than the other schools we visited however. ( but we didn't visit Oberlin... Hampshire .... Bard.... New College..... Vassar....)

NYU is chock full of hipsters, as per the definition supplied above. Maket the place pretty ... hip.

HAMPSHIRE!!!! Hands down! Hippie city! Pot smokin' liberals! Way out, man!

The concept of the hipster comes out of the 1950s. Read the attached for a description of an original hipster: http://boppin.com/anton.html.

Also take a look at the Norman Mailer book from 1978: The Radical as Hipster

I think that the reason alot of these schools are known as "hippie" schools is because of the student centeredness, or lack of external structure. They are schools where students are not "working for the man" but for themselves. Creating their own education rather than being told what to do. Many of the original hippies wanted to recreate the structures that ran society. Several of these schools have gone through phases where they were populated primarily by hippies because those were the people at the time who wanted to think and live outside the box. Now there are more hipsters, gays and lesbians, artists, the more current reincarnation of those 'out of the box' people.

Mcgill Is A Hippie School.

a hippie, to me=

-loves playing guitar outside with legs crossed around campfire and singing folk songs
-will wear sandals/flip-flops in the dead of winter
-doesn't necessarily do drugs or drink copious amounts of beer (but some do)
-sometimes doesn't wear deodorant
-likes stuff like swimming in the river and jogging in the woods
-is overly environment concious
-talks a little too much in class and thinks they are really knowledgeable about a subject (usually English lit or Philosophy), but isn't
-Likes to put their arms around people of the same sex, but might not be gay

Pretty much, a hippie is just overly liberal, and tends to seek out schools like Oberlin, Reed, Dartmouth, Swarthmore, and Bard.

ew, why would you want to go to a "hippie" school? ugh. Oh, and rbase, dartmouth is not a "hippie" school.

definately new school of florida and hamshire college ....

What I don't get is why someone would want to go to a "preppy" school -ugh. I like people who think outside the box and are politically conscious

Hippie as in lets toke on some grass?

No, not necessarily. And from what I understand, EVERYONE in the 70s "toked on grass," and thus weed actually had little to do with defining hippies.

If your a true hippie, then you smoke grass, drop acid, and whatever else they do.

How old are you, Tpeck? Do you consider yourself a hippie? From dictionary.com: A hippie is "A person who opposes and rejects many of the conventional standards and customs of society, especially one who advocates extreme liberalism in sociopolitical attitudes and lifestyles." I don't think doing drugs is a necessity, although allowing those who want to do drugs to do them certainly would be.

I think we've exhausted all the hippie schools. How about "hipster" schools? That's what I'm more interested in

get your own post, dirty hipster...

hippies are the dirty ones haha

ecape, looks like someone didn't read Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas :).

i read it!
