I'm trying to decide what colleges to apply to. I want a school that has a very hippie vibe. For me that means having a lot of outdoors activities and environmental awareness, good music, organic food, etc. First, what are some colleges that fit that description, and second, does anybody know how UC Santa Cruz compares?

Reed
Pitzer (although, to be fair, my D who goes to another Claremont college said she saw a bunch of Pitzer students in suits yesterday – I asked if she was sure they weren’t from CMC, but she was sure. But I still think Pitzer goes on this list!)
Oberlin
Evergreen

Marlboro College

University of Colorado and also Colorado College.

Humboldt State, University of Puget Sound, Eckerd College

Reed. I know someone who went there and she turned into an even bigger hippie than she was before (no offense intended).

Lewis & Clark- Portland, OR

I also think of the Warren Wilson College in North Carolina as being sort of a hippie school, but I have never visited so you would want to look into that further.

Evergreen State has that reputation.

I hear humbolt is a hippie college. I go to a small liberal arts school near UC berkely. I heard a few times that UCB is kinda hippie like.

Definitely Oberlin. Some others to consider:

Macalester

Reed

Vassar (Less politically vocal student culture and more East Coast culturally than Oberlin, but has similar Artsy vibe according to friends who attended either school and visited both campuses)

Antioch

Santa Cruz - a lot of young ‘hippie kids’ from california go there

Marlboro
Evergreen
Hampshire

Western Washington in Bellingham.

College of the Atlantic

While Macalester is very liberal, I am not sure I would put the “hippie” label on it. I live in the area, and just don’t feel like that is the vibe compared to the other colleges listed here. I mean, I assume someone with “hippie” tendencies would be accepted there because they are pretty accepting in general, but I am not sure you would find a very large cohort of fellow hippies there. :)
