My grades could be better, but I've taken the most rigorous course load my school would allow, and I'm hoping my extracurriculars/essay/recs can partially obscure them. What do you think?

I think your in, in part because of your legacy status and the fact that you have excellent grades. Although your grades could be better, it is still very good and the legacy status.

I don't think galletin is that competitive. I think even if you get accepted into CAS or Steinhardt you can still take classes
at galletin. There was this one girl, who attended classes internationally in prauge, Czech republic - beautiful city -
loved it.

Out of curiosity what HS did you attend?

Yeah, NYU has an amazing study abroad program which I will definitely take advantage of if I get in. I go to a public high school, its in one of the most competitive areas of the country but compared to the schools in towns near mine which are like among the top 20 in the nation, mine sucks. There are a lot of really smart kids in my grade, like probably the top 30% (I'm top 27% I think) or so have GPA's that are like tenths or hundredths apart but after that, then everyone is really dumb and are lucky to get into state schools.
Also, my grade as a whole is pretty smart which is a disadvantage. I know about 30 kids literally who are applying to NYU but noone is applying to Gallatin, so it won't affect me I don't think, since you're accepted by school, right?

I am not accepted yet, however I have spoken and talked to people I know who went to NYU and of course one who went to columbia.

Even if your accepted into cas and steinhardt, I believe there might be a way to take classes at galletin.

I'll look into and see what I can find about galletin's admissions (I don't think NYU publishes stats on the acceptance rate of each individual school within NYU), by checking with NYU students/applicants/experiences/etc.

Your legacy status does help and probably the fact that you are hispanic.

It all depends on how competitive galletin is, but I think you will get in. Only way you'll probably not get in is if 300-500 or so people with better grades and programs apply.

Your qualified however it is possible that NYU could run out of seats.

Again, the legacy status does help, on a side note, you have a lot of stats and activities listed which are amazing and excellent, however many students who apply to NYU lists a "laundry lists" of clubs they have joined at the hs and NYU may ignore that.

Keep posting in the forums, I must say that WOW, it seems that you must've been very busy- doing all those activities - are you applying for jan 2008?

columbia.. haha, i have like 0% chance of getting in but im applying to barnard just to see. my AP lit teacher's daughter is an admissions officer there, so maybe that would help? if not, NYU's my first choice anyway.
yeah, ive heard such mixed things about gallatin admits, some say its harder than CAS while others say its easier.
im a little worried about the laundry list (although to be honest, i actually cut stuff out!) but im more of a doer than a studier and participating makes me happy. im definitely hoping to cheer for NYU if i get in...go violets!

Have a cuzin who went to barnard, I am not sure if knowing the admissions officer will help, but maybe she can give advice.
If you go to barnard make sure you know what you want to do.

What do you intend to do at gallaten, and are you considering a major?

As for cheering for NYU, there really isnt a lot of school spirit at NYU, as indicated by a nyu newspaper. I guess it has to do with wearing the violet and white. Still the article points out that NYU is better than so many schools , ie penn state, iowa state that spirit is warranted.

Your applying for spring 2008?, if so you dont have much time.

you're in unless your essay is terrible
