Hopefully a future Gallatin student?

I've read just about everything on NYU's website on the Gallatin School of Individualized Studies and am seriously considering it as my first choice school.

It seems like it's harder to get into Gallatin than CAS? Is that true? How do my chances look?

Should I apply to CAS instead? I'd be taking most of my classes through CAS anyways but I prefer Gallatin.

For any current students: Would I be able to take print journalism classes through CAS even if I'm in Gallatin? I know Gallatin offers a wide variety of writing courses but I'd still like to take journalism classes...

pretty good chance

I'd say very good chance. My SATs were lower than yours and I just got accepted to Gallatin.

I think they look at essays and personal statements a lot for Gallatin.

GOOD LUCK!!!

Thanks for the quick replies!

BritishSam, did you basically describe what your concentration will be in your personal statement?

"It seems like it's harder to get into Gallatin than CAS?"

It depends how you define harder. CAS is better stats wise, but Gallatin looks for more "soft factors" and really wants to get to know you as a person. I think Gallatin may also REQUIRE an interview.

I think you have a pretty good shot no matter which NYU school you apply to.

Good luck.

Hrm, well just for-the-record, interviews are not required for Gallatin, or any NYU school.

But you are right, Gallatin's admissions process is based much more on individual "soft factors."

I think that you cannot take CAS journalism classes if you are at Gallatin, so you probably shouldn't apply to Gallatin. If you call Gallatin they are really nice and will answer all your questions. They don't interview anybody. I just got accepted with a 2190 and a 3.6 uw GPA. Your stats are fine, but you need to check on that journalism.

Thanks Catherine - trying to contact admissions officers through the nyu forum and i'll try calling them tomorrow.

I was told that when you are a Gallatin student that alot of your classes will be taken in the other schools / divisions at NYU, and that's how they are able to offer you an individualized major. I don't know specifically about journalism classes, but I don't see why you wouldn't, as a Gallatin student, be able to take some of them. You should definitely try and contact them, though.
