Thanks again!

If you live in New Jersey, Rutgers has a wonderful history program. But History is generally a major that is solid everywhere. I'd look more for schools that you really like than schools that are stronger in history than others.

Nope...history is not generally solid everywhere.

For example
The cirriculum vitae (i.e. what they've published) of tenured professors in the department will tell you a lot about the department. Do they have a specialty such as the the American Presidency, colonial/revolutionary, east asian studies, etc.

The poster said the northeast, so I will mention a very selective school that has had a reputation for broadly evaluating its applicant school; Columbia University. Columbia's History department is quite superior overall; American, East Asian, Eastern Europe, African.

Also, for a northeast school that has less competitive admissions, consider Richard Stockton College, a public LAC not far from Atlantic City NJ. I understand that the history department at RSC is quite good. RSC is a pleasant campus in a suburban area not far from the ocean.

Thanks everyone Im looking at all of your suggestions and I will continue my search if anyone has any other suggestions I am open to those as well.

2 reasons highlander:
1. it is similar in admissions to the schools listed in your original post.
2. there are some absolutely terrific history profs there.
