Holiday travel from RPI to/from NYC & Long Island

My S will be a freshman this fall. Wondering based on experience of others, what should we do about
Thanksgiving and other breaks ?

We got the schedule for RPI shuttle to bus and rail stations. Does that fill up ?

Is it best to take that shuttle to Amtrak or is there some bus company that make sense for direct Long Island travel ?

My son flew home, and cabs weren’t terribly priced. Often he found friends to drive him. He never did take a shuttle.

Anyone take Amtrak to NYC for holidays from RPI ? Advice (which station and how to get there).
Better ways to Long Island for Thanksgiving ?

Is the RPI shuttle the best way to get to the Amtrak station in Albany/Rensselaer County ?
Already bought Amtrak tix for Thanksgiving.

These questions are probably better answered in the Facebook parents group or the reddit page.

Am a current student that’s traveled to NYC the past few years for Thanksgiving. Have always done Amtrak which has been reliable, albeit very busy. Expect the station and train to be packed. Have always either had someone able to drive or had a cab drive me there. It’s usually $15 - $20, haven’t done the RPI shuttle so can’t comment on that.

@gawsk41 Thanks Do you need to reserve a cab long in advance or easy to get one on the street like in NYC ? I assume around Thanksgiving that could be an issue.

You really need Uber, too bad not allowed in NYS outside NYC !

My son is a recent graduate and we never reserved a cab much in advance.

Getting from RPI to the Albany train station is annoying by bus, best to share a cab. I agree with 1214mom, cabs seemed pretty easy to get even around holidays.

Unless you are way out on the Island, can’t see it being too bad to drive up there.

He got ride to Res Alb station, took Amtrak towards end of that snow storm during finals, and Amtrak was only maybe 30 min late during a 3-5in snowstorm. Very glad I got him Amtrak tix,
instead of using a car during winter weather.

Thanks all.
