Home decor projects! Help me find..(fill in the blank)!

I never had a dark porch ceiling. Usually, it is stained wood or, if painted, some lighter color. A dark color ceiling will make the ceiling look lower than it really is.

Mine is really an overhang at 12’. Would that change anything? I have a full gallon can leftover of charcoal. If I don’t use it up, I will have to throw it out.

If you have a Habitat for Humanity Restore location in your area, they will take a full gallon of paint.

Good to know! I haven’t seen or heard about them in my area. I will check it out. Thanks.

I’ve seen dark ceilings in basement rec rooms that I liked, but no experience with dark porches. Light blue (sky blue?) is often found on Southern porch ceilings.

It is a dry hot area. Could a dark color make it feel cooler? At 12’, it is higher than interior ceiling.

“Haint blue” - from the Gullah culture on the sea islands of South Carolina and Georgia…

From Wikipedia:

“ Originally, haint blue was thought by the Gullah to ward haints, or ghosts, away from the home. The tactic was intended either to mimic the appearance of the sky, tricking the ghost into passing through, or to mimic the appearance of water, which ghosts traditionally could not cross. The Gullah would paint not only the porch, but also doors, window frames, and shutters.[8] Blue glass bottles were also hung in trees to trap haints and boo hags.[9][10] But while enslaved Africans of the Lowcountry and their descendants believed in the protective power of haint blue, the cultivation of indigo to produce the dye energized the 18th-century transatlantic slave trade, thereby increasing the enslavement of Africans.[10]

As Gullah culture mingled with white southern culture, the custom became more widely practiced.[2] The use of haint blue has lost some of its superstitious significance, but modern proponents also cite the color as a spider and wasp-deterrent.[1][11] However, the color has not actually been scientifically shown to stave off bugs.[12] The associated repellent effect may stem from the use of milk paint containing lye, which does act as an insect repellent.[2] The blue color is also appreciated from an aesthetic standpoint for mimicking the color of the sky.[1][11]

@Mabelsmom - (from may 11!) - i like your cabinets. Can you tell me what type/color? its crazy how similar they are to your old ones - yet - the update is immediately noticeable. well done! did you reface? or completely replace?

Thank you! The picture doesn’t show it well, but the original cabinets were more of an orangey oak color. The new cabinets are from Medallion cherry wood with a havana finish. It’s more of a rich brown , had to get away from the orange oak. We did a tear out, and got rid of a large soffit. I didn’t want the expense or time need to replace the tile floor that ran through the kitchen , powder room and laundry room, so had a grout sealer with a stain applied. That made a big difference. Still waiting on backsplash!

I need to buy a cantilevered patio umbrella and am stunned to see that, on-line, I can get one for $90 – here: https://smile.amazon.com/VOUA-Umbrella-Cantilever-Backyard-Poolside/dp/B08SC36J3W/ref=sr_1_6?crid=1MEBU1SVA8QAT&dchild=1&keywords=cantilever+patio+umbrellas&qid=1622646385&sprefix=cantilever%2Caps%2C178&sr=8-6

or for $9,400 – here: https://www.patio.com/product-page/tuuci-polished-cantilever

Does anyone know anything about buying one of these? I don’t want either extreme, but what’s a reasonable price?

ETA: Apparently the second one I linked can cost more, depending on what features (size and weight of base) I select. Here it is for $18,000!!! https://www.patio.com/product-page/tuuci-polished-cantilever

I would not buy a cheapo cantilever umbrella because disposing of a broken one would be a pita. I would say look elsewhere.

Tuuci is the brand used by fancy hotels and resorts. Very solidly made, but an overkill for an average homeowner.

Check what Costco sells and buy from them. We acquired 2 cantilever umbrellas from Costco ($500 or so). After 10 years exposed to the elements, they still worked. One caveat- past performance is not a guarantee of the future one.

ETA: we gave this one to the kiddos. Very solidly made.

Thank you, @BunsenBurner!

@mom60 , how are you enjoying your fridge? We still don’t have ours (ordered in February). There’s a slight chance that it’ll be in a delivery this week but I’m not holding my breath. This is getting annoying. Our old fridge still works but I refuse to put it in the new kitchen, so it’s sitting on the dining room. Also it’s dripping water and needs to be defrosted… I’ve been putting it off hoping I won’t have to do it…

Speaking of frigs, my garage frig/freezer just went out, made a mess, and since I had the test kit out I checked my inside frig, too. It’s a known lemon (Samsung) and we’ve been awaiting the third strike to get a warranty replacement.

Of course that one was also not maintaining temperature. I was forced to buy two frig/freezers last week and ended up compromising on both based on what was available. I happened to be staying at a friend’s home & she has the one I wanted (KA) and I know, for sure, that I did really want that one

Yeah, @somemom , KA is what I’m waiting on. I’m so excited to get it…if I ever get it. A fridge in my kitchen, what a concept.

We ordered through a very reputable local dealer. They say they don’t really have any way to know any more than what they “see on the screen”, which is funny because I’ve looked at KA’s Twitter feed where they are responding to people’s queries with “Sorry, we don’t know, contact your local dealer” So annoying

ETA: Skunked again. New “delivery date” (if you can call it that), 7/27/21. :sob:

My dealer said they could see some ordered on the computer and maybe even scheduled to be made. I guess I could have just replaced the garage frig and waited on the inside one, and now I kind of wish I had. Using my friend’s KA, it’s just got such a nice feel to it. Be patient @JustaMom5465

For us, our whole house was tacky and outdated, so we just got a new one. That’s probably overkill for some people

Have some windows that came with wooden storm windows. They looked very nice. Being wood, they also rotted over time. I ordered a couple of aluminum storm windows to replace them. Arriving in 77 days–early October. At least I’ll have them before winter, and installing them in the fall should be more pleasant than installing them now.

Oh, they are an oddball size, tall but narrow, so no off-the-shelf replacements available.
