Homeless to Harvard

A truly amazing story. Not someone I know personally, but my best friend went to GSE with her. I can't imagine what she went through, but I am inspired by her success under such a strained situation. I also can't believe the kindness of strangers in this situation ... Harvard chose well.

"In March, the mail brought bulky envelopes filled with acceptance letters, pamphlets and welcome folders from colleges.

North Carolina State University.

Warren Wilson College.

Davidson College.

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

All said yes to Burns High senior Dawn Loggins.

She still hadn’t heard from Harvard University. She was feeling doubtful.

Mn, yeah, read the full story here. It isn't spam or anything. XD

“What right does she have to look at me and say, ‘I’m proud of you?’ She didn’t contribute or anything,” Dawn said. “But, I guess, at least she said something.”

I heard of this! So awesome…

Only if they can support her and see that she graduates. I never saw the 2003 movie referenced above of a similar story but aside from being newsworthy, they will be doing her no favor if she too drops out after a semester or two. Good luck to her.

I cried reading this story. So many kids are in her shoes. I hope she does get all the help because she is going to need it. Going to college for kids like this is so much harder. Kids need support while in college and many homeless ones do not have the support they need. They need a place to go to between semesters.

Yes, I agree that kids who have not benefitted from any kind of engaged parenting do need a great deal more support in college. There is so much that must be relearned. “Homeless to Harvard” makes for a great soundbite, but perhaps a less fulfilling reality. This young woman has a great deal of unresolved (and no doubt justified) anger toward her parents. How will that affect her relationships with mentor figures, with college authority figures who might NOT be nurturing, or with roommates?

Will Harvard make sure she has peer mentors to whom she might be more receptive? Counselors? Tutoring? Community? I hope so.

I hope, too, that someone here follows this young woman’s story and reports back in a year or two.
