Homeschool admissions and community college vs. AP classes

Hey GeekMom, if you're around, do you have any statistical info about how homeschoolers fare in college admissions when they've done CC rather than APs? Any links or past threads would be great.

Did your son do APs or only CC classes?

I have no statistics whatsoever. My son did tons of CC classes, and took the supporting AP tests for about five of them, including tests where his CC classes had no direct correlation, such as CS and English comp.

Thanks, GeekMom.

Hey GeekMom63, my high school offers a lot of AP Courses but does not offer AP Biology. I can’t take it online because UC’s don’t approve of online lab science courses. My guidance counselor told me to take the equivalent of AP Bio at my local CC and then do the AP Exam in May and do the SAT Subject Test in Biology. Will I be penalized in the college admissions for not taking AP Bio or will they understand. I am taking four other AP Courses and two CC classes.

I’ve always heard (I have no actual knowledge of admissions processes) that the colleges only expect what your opportunities really are - that if your HS doesn’t offer a class then the colleges don’t expect you to take it. In any case, with the load you describe it doesn’t sound reasonable that any college could think you’re slacking. Good luck!

Thank you so much GeekMom

Hey GeekMom63 what colleges did your son apply and get into? And what AP tests did he take? And how did he take the AP Exams if he was homeschooled?

He applied to Colo School of Mines, Colo College, Rose Hulman, Case Western, Wash U St Louis, Rice, Harvey Mudd, Caltech. Was accepted to all but Wash U - waitlisted and then rejected there.

I don’t remember exactly which exams he took - Physics (both) and Calc BC for sure, I think also Chemistry and English Composition. Did not take any other humanities, or biology.

How he took the exams was: we contacted local high schools giving them and asked if he could sit in, same as with the SAT/ACT. The College Board website gives directions, but I don’t remember the details. I do know you need to start in late Winter/early spring to get the process moving for AP tests.
