Hi Fellow Homeschoolers,

My DD is a rising junior and she has taken the most rigorous CC classes offered during her first two years of high school. This year she finished Calc III, differential equations, two semesters of physics, in addition to English, history and foreign language classes. Until this year, she had a 4.0 unweighted GPA. She got some Bs in physics and differential equations, which has brought her GPA down to about 3.8. I hope that she will be able to get into a competitive college, but I've heard that straight As are very important in acceptance to top colleges.

What have your experiences been with applying to top schools?

TIA

I think a few Bs don’t hurt in admissions, particularly given the rigorous course load your daughter is taking. She sounds like an amazing student!

My son son did have straight As in his CC classes and was accepted to a number of top colleges, so I am not really speaking from experience but rather from hearsay. Hopefully others will chime in.

Thanks for the response! What else did your son do during high school that helped with admission into college? We haven’t done any APs yet and I’m wondering if we should.

My son took a ton of CC classes, with one B in a non-major class, which is why I didn’t answer the first question. But the other stuff he did… Worked (unpaid) as a research flunky for a friend’s mom who is a PhD at a local college, did a project in his major area for the CC (also unpaid, but used by real people), worked his hindparts off in the essays, was lucky enough to be born smart and frugal enough that we could pay our EFC, took classes other than in his major area of interest, went to math camps four summers in a row, took a few AP tests to support the CC classes, really looked into what he wanted in a college so he was applying to schools where he was a good match.
