I'm worried about getting homesick if I were to go to boarding school. I love the school but I think potential homesickness might prevent me from going. Any thoughts or tips?

It helps if you go into it understanding that homesickness is typical and will be part of the adjustment. Many extended summer camps don’t allow contact w parents/outside for the first two weeks to head off homesickness. Set a target such as 8 weeks of hanging in there. If you are still homesick then, then you talk about leaving if, that’s what you really feel, w your parents. Chances are pretty good that by then you will be well settled, but on the other hand, it is really a relief feeling you have the out if you find you it too difficult. Sometimes just KNOWING it is okay to leave, after a certain amount of time, makes it easier to stay.

I always liked these ideas for making boarding school happy and productive. There’s a nice paragraph on homesickness at the end of the original post. <a href=“Some secrets for getting off to a good start this Fall - Prep School Admissions - College Confidential Forums”>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/prep-school-admissions/905554-some-secrets-for-getting-off-to-a-good-start-this-fall-p1.html
