Honest Chances at Upper Tier Liberal Arts Schools

I am a senior from Nebraska. I am part of a high-school IB program, and plan on receiving my diploma. I have taken all IB and honors courses during my high-school career, the most rigorous and challenging courses available in my school.

My weighted GPA, on a scale of 5 as highest possible, is 4.409.

I am ranked fourth out of 414.

ACT Scores: Composite (34), English (36), Math (34), Reading (33), Science (33), Writing (9)

SAT Subject Tests: Math Level 1 (730), Literature (710)

Academic Honors/Accomplishments: Participant at mock-Legislature, 'Boys' State'; Two time Regional Science Fair finalists, one time State finalist; attended 2009 Presidential Inauguration with a selective leadership organization.

Extracurricular Activities:
4 Years, 4 Varsity Letters of Cross Country
4 Years, 3 Varsity Letters of Swimming, Senior Team Captain
4 Years, 1 Varsity Letter of Soccer
2 Years Marching Band
2 Years Participant in Habitat for Humanity
3 Years Volunteer at local hospital
Member of Spanish Language Table and International Club

I have strong personal essays which creatively describe being ready for a 'new-stage-in-my-life.' My recommendation letters have been written by my two-year Chemistry teacher and three-year Humanities teacher.

I am planning on applying to high-caliber liberal arts schools such as Amherst, Brown, Claremont McKenna, GWU, Middlebury, Pomona, Reed, Swarthmore, UChicago, Wesleyan, and Williams. I am not entirely sure of my chances and am thus very anxious for response. I feel I need more 'safety schools' where I know I will get in, so if you have any suggestions or simple comments on my chances, it would be fantastic. Thanks.

not sure. you should check trinity out, it’s a great liberal arts school too! ;)

Amherst - Low Reach (for everyone)
Brown - Low Reach (for everyone)
CM - Good shot
GWU - Good shot
Middlebury - Good shot
Pomona - In
Reed - In
Swat - High Match/Low Reach
UChicago - High Match/Low Reach
Wesleyan - High Match/Low Reach
Williams - Low Reach (for everyone)

Might look at Holy Cross(don’t have to be religious) very good LAC with nice campus 1 hour from Boston. HC has great science majors with new $70 million building and sponsors internships. Holy Cross offers good combination of academics and athletics(competes against many Ivies). HC is need blind in admissions as are the Ivies and has one of the highest alumni giving rates at 54%.

You look like a strong candidate for all.

However, the above list is off. Pomona is the hardest school to get into on your list.

@tomopark: Besides Trinity are there other LC that are more within my reach (that you know of and would suggest for a student with a wide range of interests)?

@ICanDivideByZero: What is meant by Low Reach? Does that mean that getting in will be difficult, moreso than ‘good shot?’ Is there anything at this point, beyond writing my essays that can help my chances?

@par72: How deep does the Catholic tradition run in the blood of Holy Cross? If I have no religious affiliation, will I be noticeably different from my peers? Do you have any other recommendations?

@2college2college: Are there any inconsistencies with ICanDivideByZero’s other estimations? Do you seem my chances as hopeful, or just that I match what the schools’ freshmen class of whenever is like? Am I a strong candidate, or a possible attendee?

Holy Cross seeks a very diverse student body and students of all faith backgrounds and no faith tradition make up the HC CAMPUS. Holy Cross does have a strong school pride and this helps in job placement, graduate school and school sponsored internships. HC has a pretty good web site.

These two are safeties for no one; they are match schools for the OP.

How is Pomona - an “In” when its ranked number 6 and has a lower acceptance rate than other schools which were listed as a High Match/Low Reach such as Wesleyan which is ranked number 12? Can someone explain that to me please, because that just doesn’t add up.

Anyway back on topic, you have a nice strong app and should be looking forward to many acceptances :)

“Can someone explain that to me please, because that just doesn’t add up.”

ICanDivideByZero is a HS student (I didn’t have a clue back then, either), so should be asking, not answering. ;)

Lol at Pomona being “in”. It is a very difficult school to get into, and is a reach for the vast majority of people. Perhaps a high match at best for the OP because he/she is pretty qualified.

You’re a good applicant though, nice slew of athletics. What is your ethnicity? That could have an affect. Good chance everywhere though I would think
