I’ve read about crime at apartments (across from UCF), and I’ve read about the campus.
Do you enjoy it? Did it help you get a good Computer Science job?
@2sunny. I’ve spent a week on the campus at UCF last summer while S was enrolled at the UCF Cybersecurity Camp. The layout is very nice – flat with lots of green, many modern buildings, and a circular design to the campus that gives it a more cozy, familiar feeling.
Crime can be an issue at or near most every campus. I went to UVa – look at how many murders have taken place there in just the past several years, on campus or just off campus, together will all the national publicity. Not good. The security on campus at UCF seems to be pretty solid, and local police are working with UCF to stem the incidents in nearby apartment complexes.
OK, thank you! Yes, I agree that it can happen anywhere. Bottom Line: Find a college that makes S or D comfortable and happy, and try to find a place that is great at helping you get a good Co-op, or that looks great on your Resume!!
@VABogart
Does your son attend UCF right now? I only did the online tour. It looks gorgeous, modern, and has nice dorms.
Also has great Honors College with Towers as nice place to live. Not sure about class sizes (lectures) in general ed. classes (OUTSIDE of the honors college)
UCF is one our options, but would have to FLY back & forth 4 times per year, and won’t have a car (unless a used car is purchased). This makes it hard to get to Co-ops (unless lucky, and intern at Research Park…nice & close)
@2sunny S attended the UCF Cybersecurity Camp last July (in the modern Harris building) and has applied for admission this fall (mechanical engineering). He’ll make his decision soon but I’m guessing he’ll go with UCF. He’ll be in the Burnett Honors College so he would be living at the Towers.
Agree UCF is easy to get to – lots of direct flights between Washington, DC and Orlando. Also have a sister- and brother-in-law living in Orlando (they run an organic food shop), so S would have relatives nearby as well.
Like a lot of large universities, there’s going to be very large classes (100+ students) but as you progress, the class sizes will get smaller. At UVa, I remember my USGovernment class was 200 students and my Economics class had over 400. If you can stay focused, the large class size shouldn’t be a big deal.
@VABogart We’ll be visiting U of KY for Merit week. Found this great link with ROI for his major http://www.payscale.com/college-roi/major/computer-science?page=19
