Honest Q/A with Current McGill student!!

hey, may i know how the macdonald residences are like? thanks!

is an IB grade predicted of 32 too low for the faculty of arts?

I’m an American HS student in CO with German citizenship…I got some questions as well.

Do foreign students generally pick up French or can you get by with just English? I’d love to become fluent by the time I leave McGill.
Where would you go to study foreign languages? My major is engineering-related, but I wanna continue Spanish/start Chinese as well.
Does applying for residency affect your admission at all?
Should I submit my app before I take the required SAT 2s? I just need a Chem SAT 2.
Oh, and ACT without Essay, big deal or doesn’t matter?

Thx :stuck_out_tongue: Just answer what you can ;D

You can get by entirely with just English. Most non-Quebec students do not speak French and do just fine. The university is an English university and services/stores around the university are almost totally bilingual.

I don’t think that applying for residency will affect admission chances.

Hey did anyone apply early? McGill sent out this email awhile ago that said we could now upload unofficial transcripts and other documents online to speed up admission decision. I thought that was a great idea, except they don’t want you to upload and mail a paper one as well because that messes them up. Unfortunately I already had my counselor mail it end of October. Anyone any thoughts? Would suck if I get my decision after everyone else for being an early bird…

Another question… I think I might come out of first marking period of senior year with an 88 in AP Biology… This might be trouble since The Arts and Science faculty and the Science faculty both want A- in science grades minimum… Hope I don’t get cut off straight away, since I have high SAT grades, ranking, and junior yr GPA. I have 97 in ap physics, so i dunno if that’ll save me. ughhh. will try harder 2nd marking period.

Hey guys,
so I’m a french citizen living in the USA, ive done all my high school here too.
I applied last week and well turns out I entered the wrong birth date… yes thats actually possible to do… by one day, i probably scrolled down or something. I sent an email and have got no response and i called and the guy changed my pin but not the date on the application. What should i do?
Now assuming that that all goes well and i can change it, McGill is my dream school and i really want to get in, so here are my stats, what do you think?
I have a 4.16 WGPA and 17/233 class rank.
English is not my first language, french is, and i also speak spanish fluently

Btw does anyone know the earliest possible time they can tell you their admittance decision? My stuff turned “ready or review” yesterday, and I sent in my application around October 20th. Can I fantasize about receiving a decision during Christmas or is that too far fetched?

RingoStarr, after my application went to “ready for review” it was around 3 weeks if I recall correctly until I received notification of my offer, the same for a friend of mine. This was around February time though, they may be faster/slower this early in the process.

Hi guys,

I’m from British Columbia and I will be applying to McGill within the next month to next month and a half or so. I really need your help in answering some questions, because they’re literally keeping me up at night.

A bit about me:

I was never the “model” student. I’m in Grade 12 this year, but my marks last year were nothing extraordinary. My only A was a 90% in foods. I finished with about 70% in Math 11, and 82% in English 11. This year has been a lot better. The first semester is not over yet, but as it stands, my marks look something like this:

Chemistry 12: About 95%
Math 12: About 88%
Biology 12: About 90%

The reason I say “about” is because the BC teachers are currently having issues negotiating a new contract with the Provincial Government, and thus were not allowed to show us our real marks. I will be getting them by the end of the semester, but all these marks were calculated by myself using a method advised by the teachers that I have. Nevertheless, I am positive that those marks are 100% correct, but at the very least, are extremely close.

My dilemma is that I also have French 12 this semester. I’m in French immersion, and thus I need it to graduate. My current mark in that class is somewhere between 70%-73%. It frightens me to think that because of that one lousy mark, my entire future will be jeopardized.

So assuming I have a 70% in French, my average comes out to be 85.75%.
Assuming I have a 73% in French, my average comes out to be 86.5%
It shouldn’t be too hard to get my mark up to 75%, which would make my average out to be 87%
And if I somehow manage to get it to about 80%, my average would turn out to be 88.25%

I’m still holding out hope that I can somehow get an 86% in that class. I didn’t do all too well on a test or two, and I plan on rewriting them. But it does scare me.

Do I have to show McGill my French mark even if I don’t want to? I always thought they took your top 6 marks. Couldn’t I just show them my Math, Bio and Chem marks, along with 3 from courses I’ll have next semester? If not, then would the above averages be enough to get into McGill? I’m contemplating between going into Arts or into Sciences. Are those averages enough? Do you think I have a good chance?

Thanks everyone, it’ll really be a load off my chest.

hello! i am a white girl from Boston, MA (usa) and i’ve got a 2080 on my SAT’s with 750’s in english and french subject tests. i spent last year abroad in france
could you tell me if my french experience will help me get it?
also, how bad is the winter? be honest  i am used to gross and wacky new england weather but i don’t know if i can handle the hilly campus in ice and snow…

Wow I never understood why American Universities lower their standards for minorities. If you’re smart, you’re smart. If you’re an idiot, you’re an idiot. Doesn’t matter if you’re pink, white, black, yellow, brown, or purple. Anyways, to “the white girl”, as far as I know, Canadian Universities won’t care what skin color you are, but regarding the French experience, it isn’t really a 100% requirement for any of the main departments, so I’d say know, but if they have 2 people with exactly the same credentials, but one of them spent a year abroad in France, then my hunch is that they’ll go with that person. So, although your French experience probably won’t help you get in over anyone with a higher GPA/better grades, it’ll certainly help, at least somewhat, when you’re pitted against people who got the same marks as you. And I’m from Vancouver, so I’d also like to know what the winters are like in Montreal. And if anyone could answer my question above, I’d seriously appreciate it.

The time in France will have no bearing on admission to McGill. Admission is strictly a numbers game at McGill and other Canadian universities. McGill doesn’t play favourites–if two applicants are tied, then either both get in or both do not.

The time in France might help with scholarships–for major scholarships, McGill does consider a variety of extra-curricular experiences.

Don’t worry about the hilly campus in winter–they are very good about keeping the ice off the sidewalks (frequent clearing, frequent salting etc.). When I was there last February even early on a Saturday morning after it had snowed overnight all of the preciptation was removed on the hill sidewalks.

I’d like to ask if McGill is a need-blind college or need aware. Thanks

Admission decisions at all Canadian universities are based on academic stats only. Your financial situation is irrelvant. McGill does not promise to meet financial need however.

Hi, I’m an American student living in the United Arab Emirates. I go to a high school that follows the American curriculum so i’m applying as a student from a US high school. My average in grade 11 is 88% and my predicted marks for the first semester of grade 12 is around 94%. I scored a 1790(630/550/610) on SAT I and i’m doing my SAT IIs(Math level 1 and Chemistry) in January. According to the English proficiency requirements, I have to do the TOEFL test. I thought that I didn’t have to do it since I go to a school where everything is taught in English. So I registered but I couldn’t find any date earlier than the 5th of February. I applied to chemical engineering and mechanical engineering as an alternate major.

I have a few questions. First of all, what are my chances of getting in? and will me doing the SAT IIs and TOEFL in January and February affect my chances of getting in? because the deadline for submitting the required documents is March 15th. I will be getting my TOEFL scores around the end of February, is that considered late and will it jeopardize my chances of getting in? Im freaking out and I really need an answer to my questions please.

Hey, I just got into McGill from the US. I want to go there but my dad wants me to go to SUNY Binghamton, which is 20k vs 30k for McGill… What do you think about this?

I also want to study econ, I was thinking about doing a joint honors in Econ and math, since I would need math if I wanted to go to grad school and because I think it’s important anyway.

Earlier you said that getting internships is difficult, aren’t they really important for jobs and grad school?

Also, aren’t grades really important for grad school, but it seems that McGill has a lot of work and it is difficult to get good grades?

My parents are also worried about how big and impersonal (weak advising) McGill is…However, I think I would be able to handle it and it’s time to learn how to take care of myself anyway.

Is it better to have a roommate first year? It seems scary to be all alone and not know anyone.

Hi ecograd,
Can you please check your inbox? thnx

Hi,

I was recently accepted into Mcgill’s Faculty of Agriculture however I was unaware that that school was on the McDonald Campus. Is it possible the transfer into the Faculty of Education after I accept my admission and before classes start? Also, if I am unable to do this, would I still able to live on the downtown campus if I am in the Faculty of Agriculture? Please Please help!

There’s a shuttle to the MacDonald campus from the downtown campus (and vice-versa), look up the McGill website for schedule. I’m not entirely sure where the freshmen year is spent for students in the Faculty of Agriculture, it may still be on the main campus. You should verify that with McGill people. I don’t think you can transfer faculties before classes start, but it shouldn’t be a problem after the first semester or two (people change programs “all the time”, sometimes between faculties).
