The minimum to be full time is 12 credits per semester, which usually means 4 courses. The standard number of courses per semester, to finish on time, is 30 credits per year, thus five 3-credit courses per semester. I think there’s a hard maximum limit now of 18 credits per semester (6 courses, trust me, that’s insane already).

I don’t know enough to answer the other question.

How do inter-faculty transfers work? I’m an Arts pre-frosh who’s contemplating transferring to the Faculty of Science: would I be able to make the switch after one semester of strong grades in science classes?

Hi, I’d also like to know if I have any realistic chances of getting into these same schools: Mcgill (first choice), UofT, and UBC
Currently a Junior, I take the IB diploma course, and attend a school which sends only students’ cumulative sophomore-junior gpa’s to colleges (unless asked for others/more). Although my sophomore gpa was a horrific 3.22, I managed to bring it up this year to, hopefully a weighted 4.2. But even so, my GPA will obviously average out to be very poor and unappealing.
I still don’t know my predicted IB score but I heard that it is crucial in the admissions process as well. Is it perhaps more important than your GPA?

Other questions:
Does Mcgill (and others, but mainly Mcgill)…
-Ask for senior grades (GPA) and take it into account for your cumulative gpa?
-Observe and acknowledge improving grades and take that into account?
-Put more emphasis and give more attention to your progress in your HL courses?
-Do the following questions’ answers vary depending on the faculty you are applying to? (I want to apply in the arts, psychology)

These are all inside questions that I find difficult to clarify from the website and/or other sources. I would appreciate it if any of you may answer, thank you!

Hi. I was wondering if I will hurt my chances of getting into an MBA if I take courses like sculpture or creative writing (I’m going to the management department this fall). Also, sorry if this is a dumb question, but what is a “bird” class?

Hi, I’m starting McGill this fall. Can someone tell me more about the placement exams, specifically MATH 141 and MATH 133? I studied integration and vectors during my A’Level, and um sure about MATH 141, but will MATH 133 be too hard to manage? What will happen if I fail, as in are there any penalties? When will we get back the results? I haven’t registered for MATH 141 n 133 yet, will I be able to register later if I have to? Can I register now for the courses for which MATH 141 n 133 are prerequisites?

I don’t know the syllabus for A level calculus, but did you cover trigonometry, applications and stuff like that? If you fail the placement tests, you might not be able to register for these classes.

I did A Levels too and trust me, dont try and attempt the 141 paper if you havent done further math at AL. I did just normal AL math and found the material very different, they have some sample past papers up on the website. Unless you did CIE Further Math I wouldn’t suggest taking the placement exam as all the other AL boards pale in comparison to the topics and difficulty you’ll face.

You can register later, but chances are the classes might get full or not. I dont really know how popular these are ( probably not that much though). No penalties, since its a placement you might just be asked to go for the normal class but chances are you wont fail. I mean you only need like a C+ to get the credit from the placement.

The arts faculty gives some lee way to register for courses with 141 as a pre req if you’ve just done AL math as I got permission. I dont know which faculty your in but if it requires alot of it material from 141 chances are they wont let you. Mine only needed some material from partial deravatives and hyperbolic. 133 is generally a corequisite for most, not a pre req which means you can register for 133 and the course you want if thats the case. If not, well then no.

I’ve already asked the engineering advising. Even if you plan to take placement exams, you should still register for your U0 courses, and if you pass, then you can just drop those courses and add new ones. Don’t worry, they’ll make sure you get a spot in all required courses.

thanks everyone @bubu: I could register for the courses needing 141, even though um in mechanical engineering, which is prone to needing a lot of math i guess. If I need a C+ to pass, shouldn’t I at least attempt the placement? @johnny: When do the results for the placement come out, and will they allow me to take one of the 3rd semester courses in September? Most of the courses are filling up like buckets under torrential rain … most of the complementary courses I wanted to register for are full already! Do you know if they are gonna open up later, coz there aren’t even any waitlist positions!

@mayisha: I don’t know when the results come out exactly, but the advisor said they come out quickly, so I guess before start of courses probably. If you pass the exams and are able to skip the 1st year math and science courses, then you just drop those and add 3rd semester courses. If they’re full, then just contact them and they’ll make sure you get a place in required courses. At least, that’s what they said. Complementary courses can open up later if people drop them. Most probably, places will open up during the 1st 2 weeks of courses, since that’s the add/drop period and some people most likely won’t like some of the courses. Hope this helps. See you in engineering this fall :)

You’re going too? Are u in mechanical too? By the way, the housing decisions came out … where are u staying then? n would you happen to know much about 3601 University Street?

No I’m in ECE not mechanical. Yes I’m going. We’ll probably be in FACC 100 and math classes together though. I’m not in housing, off campus. And I don’t anything about that street. Sorry. Are you entering as U0 or U1? Which country are you from?

And if you’re unsure about whether to take placement exams or not, there’s an accelerated sequence for math. So, instead of taking MATH 140/141, you take 150/151 which cover 139+140+141+222 and is more challenging. But you have to consult advisors in August first to see if they allow you to do so.

Um entering as U1 … have u already got hold of an apartment? If it isn’t too much trouble, can u please tell me how affordable off-campus apartments are, and how far from campus? I’m not very happy with my room assignment … um from Bangladesh, n u?
