@vistajay do you think UVA is too far a reach for me based on my academics?

"but then thought, “What’s the point?” Too expensive, no merit aid, little financial aid, not a good enough school to go into deep debt. "

Vistajay, NYU has given some kids I know their very best merit/aid package. So don’t rule it out if the your D’s numbers are up there and/or she adds geographical diversity to the population there.

UVA is reachy for anybody out of state.

The rule of thumb is that you need to find a school where your stats guarantee admissions and that you would enjoy attending. Do you want an urban school, or is NYU just because it was “that school” for you when you were still a dreamy little kid?

I’m glad your parents can assist you financially, to some extent. You should be able to find some great options.

UVA is certainly a reach but I would apply still if I were you. Check it out for yourself but I believe UVA does a good job with financial aid even for OOS applicants. My D would love to go to UVA, and as a legacy with good stats she can probably get in, but we would be full pay there.

Almost all UVa aid is need-based. They do meet 100% of need for US out of state students, but that typically includes 4K work study and 7K a year federal loans. If you have a good full time summer job, you may be able to skip the work study. .

A family friend’s daughter went to NYU for a summer term during her undergrad years. That summer gave her the NYU/NYC experience without sacrificing the family finances.
