Honor Societies in High School

What does CC think about the merits of joining/ starting honor societies in High School?

At my school, aside from NHS and CSF, honor societies are relatively unheard of. I often see several honor societies on CC example apps.

At the same time, there are groups of students that are strong at certain subject areas. We have a Science Bowl team and science club, competitive math club and a friend and I are making plans for a foreign language club that will compete in NACLO. I have the impression that it's groups of students like these that would form an honor society.

In college, I understand the merits of career networking, and etc., but, as it stands now, I just see honor societies as a way for students to pay for extra recognition for the accomplishments they've already made.

What are your experiences with High School honor societies at your school? What do they do? Is it worth the time to start an affiliated chapter at one's school?

Well at my school we only have NHS and NAHS (National Art Honors Society). I am an active member of NAHS, and love it; we pretty much do community service relating to the arts. I’m not in NHS, because I was rejected from being a member. :/

Pretty much, anyone who is a junior or senior and has a 3.5 is allowed to submit an essay, a list of extracurriculars, and 4 teacher recommendations to be reviewed by an unknown council of teachers and PARENTS to determine who is worthy of being in the society. Yeah, it sucks being told that you can’t be in something for reasons they do not even disclose to you, but toy move on.
Maybe instead of creating an honor society chapter, start a club over a hobby or interest you have and others would join.

IMO, they don’t mean much. I was invited to join NHS and the English Honors Society, but I didn’t bother
