Honors Algebra 2 Teacher Won't Round Grade Up

Hey, currently I am a freshman in high school, and I have an issue with my Honors Algebra 2 teacher.

I worked hard to get an A+ first quarter, but I only got an A this current quarter. I knew I had to grind out on the midterm to have a chance, and that is what I did. I came in for help, putting in several hours at the math lab and with the teacher.

I took the midterm, nervous but ready.

I got a 99. I was elated. That midterm was very hard, especially for a freshman like me. Then I plugged my grades in into my calculator and checked what my final grade would be with a 20% midterm.

I got a 97.372% RIPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP.

Earlier today, while I was reviewing with my teacher he said he would give me extra credit for coming in so much and studying hard.

Now I found out he was joking. Bruh.

He wouldn’t give me any extra credit or assignments, and wouldn’t give me extra points or anything though I did all of the unassigned problems in the book. I never missed class, an assignment, or anything else.

What should I do? I already asked, but I feel that his decision was slightly unfair, knowing how some teachers will willingly round-up grades. With even a formative bonus point or two, or a decimal curve on the midterm I would get the A+.

Should I email my counselor? I don’t know what to do.

Thanks.

Do you use CPM ebooks in the class? I am also a freshman taking that same class.

You already know we always grindin’ on CPM.

In my class, a 97.3 is a 97. You learned to round in elementary school… a .5 rounds up, a .4 rounds down.

And I really don’t buy the “especially for a freshman like me.” line. Either you’re qualified to be in the class, or you’re not. If you’re pulling high 90’s you are.

But please, oh, please, do not start in on extra credit. No macaroni glued to paper plates. You’re taking an advanced algebra class. Get the answers right an you’ll get the credit. Get some answers wrong and you’ll lose some credit. It’s really as cut and dried as that.

The freshman comment was not to show intelligence, but to show that I have never experienced something like high school before, and that getting a 99 on my first midterm ever I believe shows effort. I am basically just mad about the extra credit ‘joke.’

How much do you study for these tests?

Yeah, That’s was mean by your teacher…

What do you want him to round a 97.3 to? We also don’t know if 20 kids in the class got a 99 or 100%. He’s the one giving the grades based on his tests, the others in the class, your participation, etc.

Normally a couple hours over about 3 days. I put in 15 hours for the midterm, more than ever. I came to school early and left school late to practice.

I am sure that I got one of the top scores, I am pretty consistent in math. I want the 97.372 to be rounded to a 97.5, which is an A+ at my school, while a B+ is a 90. It is mainly because my school is a well-ranked public school.

I meant to say that a B+ does not round up, but an A+ does. Sorry.

Do you spend the entire time in the period on the tests?

Do you mean that I use all my time? If so, yes I spent the entire 1.5 hour block period on my test.

Get over it. You earned an A and got an A (which by the way is an excellent grade in Honors Algebra 2). You are in HS and the time for extra credit and bonus points for trying hard is over. The teacher did nothing wrong. If you pursue this you will quickly earn a reputation in the school as a grade grubber. Thank the teacher for his extra work with you that helped you to earn the A and move on graciously.

What is the hardest class you are taking? Certainly NOT Honors Alg 2. You’re doing pretty good!

Honestly HA2 is probably the hardest, as it requires the most effort besides my other class that I have a TERRIBLE teacher in that doesn’t even care.

What chapter are you on right now?

I’m on chapter 5

Lots of graphing so far.
