What’s your major…I wouldnt necessarily advise you to take it if you are engineering, since Honors Calc III is a two semester class that goes very in depth, while the regular Calc III is a 1 semester class. I’ve heard it’s a very stimulating class and obviously tough, but it is taught by one of the best profs at Rice. Just depends if you’d rather do Diff Eq and Calc III in fall and spring respectively, or take Diff Eq along with the first semester of Honors Calc III, and then take the remainder of H Calc III in the second semester.

One of my friends took this class. He’s a math major, and he really liked it. It’s not incredibly helpful for engineering, but if you’ll major in math or caam, or just have an open schedule (ie not engineering), it can be a really interesting class. It will also help build a foundation for future math.

If the highest math you’re going to do is DiffE, it probably won’t be so useful for you, but if you want to take some deeper classes (PDEs, analysis, OR,…etc) it would be a great set of classes to take.

O-week will be a good time to discuss this further — you can talk with the prof or another advisor about your options. Rice also has a very flexible “shopping” period for classes at the beginning of the semester, so that you can drop/add after you go check out the classes you think you might want to take.

congrats anxiousmom! you are a great help to everyone here

I (once again) agree with her and suggest waiting to Oweek… Multiple perspectives help. for example im pretty good at math but am terrible in multi variable calc. i jut couldnt do that class at all

sometimes people dont get it, dont like the teacher… talk to many before deciding. oherwise talk to the prof. they are often honest about the workload and the students that normally take the class. none of em try to make u tale the class if it oesnt seem like a fit. they may recmmend sitting in and seeing what u think
