Hello! I am a current senior from PA trying to make a final decision for this fall. UNC Chapel Hill is one of my top choices right now! I applied for Honors Carolina as well, but I was not accepted. I know it’s an awesome school, but attending UNC makes me a little nervous because of how big it is, which is part of the reason I applied for the Honors program - I thought it would help make it feel a little smaller. Is it an option to ask for reconsideration for Honors, and if so, how would that work? Even if it is, would it be worth it?
A little bit about me, also, I guess.
SAT/ACT: 1530/35
Rank: school doesn’t rank but I think I’m first
Intended major: journalism
Weighted GPA: 4.25 (no grades below A)
APs: World History (5), APUSH (5), Lang (5), Lit, Spanish, Calc (5), Stat, Psych, Studio Art
ECs: editor in chief of two school publications (newspaper and magazine), yearbook writer, volunteer with cancer support organization, dancer since age 10, NHS plus three other school honor societies, I’m forgetting something but those are the main ones
Awards: academic awards for my school in almost every subject, Distinguished honors every semester
I think my recs and essays were pretty good
My son is in Honors Carolina, he’s a BME major, currently a sophomore. He says that if you’re looking at hard sciences, Honors is less than useless, and can get to be an issue, because they don’t really offer any courses that would apply to his major, or either of his minors (Materials Science and Sports Med). It’s not a special sub-school or anything, Honors housing is not guaranteed, you just have first dibs on Honors classes. Don’t let just Honors be a significant factor in any way.
Hi, I personally don’t think it’s worth asking for reconsideration. I’ve heard plenty of people say it’s nothing more than a title. There are great clubs and ECs to make the school feel smaller. With that being said, you have nothing to lose by asking them to reconsider you for Honors Carolina. If it’s not too much work, do it. But if you have to jump through hoops, I don’t think it’s worth it.
@2020hannah - honors at UNC Chapel hill is almost useless for any STEM major ; there are probably only 1 or 2 honors sections for a class you would take and that assumes it’s during the semester you need it. Honors at UNC should not be a deciding factor.
what will matter in the end is your GPA. You don’t get bonus points for taking honors classes. You can graduate summa cum laude without honors classes. That is far more impressive.
