Just found this “tongue in cheek” article about the value (or should I say lack thereof) of Honors Carolina. Does this program have much substance? It seems like anyone with a B average can take Honors Classes. What’s so special?
Honors Carolina does have distinct advantages. They have some programs like assured admit to Kenan Flagler which can be a huge burden off of someone’s shoulders trying to apply to KF. While the honors courses may not be as expansive as other schools, Honors students definitely can get advantages if they enroll in the program.
@Skrunch Honors Carolina does not give you assured admission into KF. adscram was probably talking about Excel@Carolina, which is basically a collection of opportunities/programs offered to UNC’s top admits (including assured admission into the business/pharmacy/journalism school, Honors Carolina, and research/study abroad grants and fellowships). Students that are selected for Excel are emailed a survey where they pick which opportunities they want. Some may receive Honors Carolina AND assured admission into KF, but the two are unrelated otherwise.
As for the actual substance of Honors Carolina, I’ve heard mixed things. It’s definitely not like honors programs at other colleges (like a “college within a college” with separate living quarters, exclusive classes, etc) but it does have its pros – first year seminars, early registration for honors classes, and opportunities to attend special events.
I think it is fair to say that much of the benefit from Honors Carolina is directly dependent upon the effort of the individual to take advantage of opportunities that Honors Carolina presents. They put on multiple HC events weekly. You will receive email notices regarding the weekly schedule. If you don’t attend any of their social events, guest lectures, food for thought dinners, study abroad programs, networking events with distinguished alumni, perhaps get help to pursue a distinguished scholarship, , etc. then you may not see much value in the program. As far as the honors courses go, some are unique (particularly the first year seminars) and those that mirror standard classes are typically smaller sized, cover material at a brisker pace, and as such, can delve into course material to a deeper level. Some of the ones I’ve attended also had extra projects. HC also does target some programs into the honors dorm. They also provide a number of advantages when it comes to seeking internships and employment. I was invited to several exclusive networking and interview events that were only offered to HC, Morehead and PBK members. Also a HC resume book is published.
As previously noted, KF AAP is absolutely not open to all HC members. It is an offering through excel@carolina, as is HC membership.
anyone know if any of the programs in Excel@Carolina offer merit scholarships? I was accepted to UNC and applied to Excel@Carolina but am just interested to know if there is any merit scholarships awarded if you are accepted to a certain program
Some of the programs offer summer stipends (funded summer experiences). There is also the Chancellor Science Scholars, but I believed that program’s grant money (based merely on googling) is based on encouraging previously unrepresented groups to pursue science/math PhDs–similar to the Meyerhoff program at UMBC.
