Is the honors program a big deal at Carolina? Like for example at UMD its not superselective but its a good opportunity. How big of a presence does it have at UNC? Are non-honors kids at a huge disadvantage or are the level of academics at the University good enough that it doesn't create a huge disparity

The only advantage of being in the honors program is that you get the chance to enroll in honors classes before the rest of the students. But non-honors students can also take honors classes if there are openings or the professor allows them to. There is no disparity between honors and non-honors students academically.

Thats good to hear. Because I definitely don’t think I would be accepted at UNC’s honor program. I do like that they have a lot of interesting programs such as Burch Fellows though

Non honors students can go on honors trips. Being in the honors program also DOES NOT mean that you graduate with honors. The diplomas are identical. There is a difference on your transcript however, they note each year you’re in the program (and obviously you see the min of 2 honors classes) Besides that, you get priority registration (as was already stated) and you can live in Cobb (but only if you have an honors roommate, I believe).

It is not a big deal at all. I didn’t know one of my friends was in the program until we talked about spring registration. IMO, it does have some perks, but it’s mainly a tool for admissions.

How does UNC notify students of their acceptance into the honors program? One school sent me an acceptance letter two weeks after I received my acceptance letter, another just started sending me emails beginning with “as you already know, you’ve been admitted to the honors program at…” and going right on as if it were obvious

oops, I meant that another college sent me an honors acceptance letter two weeks after I’d received my acceptance to the University

Hi dittodog1yr,

Per the Tuesday, 2/1 post on the UNC Admissions blog by Dave Meredith in Admissions, the Honors Program will send out admission letters by next Friday, 2/11:

The Honors Program will send their invitation letters out by 2/11. Scholarship Day invitations were mailed on 1/26. The Office of Scholarships and Student Aid will make additional awards in the upcoming weeks. These awards are obviously not included in the Scholarship Day program. Recipients of scholarships will be notified by letter - not through their MyUNC portal.

Thanks,

so how often do non-honors students take honors courses?

It’s not that the honors program isn’t great, I’ve really enjoyed it, but not getting into it DEFINITELY is not a reason to not come to Carolina. If you really want to be in it you can apply to be in it sophomore year. As long as your grades are where they should be you can get in.

^^ You can take as many or as few as you’d like. If you want to take an honors course, you just head to the office and get put down on a waitlist and they figure it out from there.

Dittodog, they sent out emails today to accepted students.

Does the scholarship and honors invitation go only to those who have already been accepted on the first deadline or does it include those who did not apply until the second deadline? I think it would be hard with a second deadline of 1/18 to send scholarshp day invitations on the 26th.

Does anyone have any input on this?

Hi Spiceman,

UNC will send out a separate wave of Honors Program and Scholarship Day notifications to those who are accepted from the second-deadline applicant pool.

Thanks MeadowBrook for the information. I appreciate it.
