Honors College Fall 2013

Does anyone know if Tech is still accepting students into the Honors College?

No they are not, I believe they stopped accepting applications in February. It never hurts to call though and see! If not apply next year!

Checked the website. Applications close on 1 Apr for Fall 2013.

They extended the deadline; that’s great!

@dustaama: I have quite a few engineering friends who are in honors. They all seem to like it. There isn’t a ton of specific engineering classes that they offer honors (you can look up past classes at honors.ttu.edu), but you can take a bunch of your basics honors (such as physics, calculus, and other required things like History, etc.). I would recommend honors to anyone because you meet a lot of people through honors classes since they are usually small and interactive. You build better relationships with your professors (one invited us all over for dinner one night) for better rec letters, and honestly half the time honors classes are easier than the regular large lecture weed out courses. I’ve had a great experience living in the honors dorm with mostly like minded people, and honors offers many perks and opportunities throughout campus. If you can get in, I highly recommend it. If you have any more specific questions, or ones you would like me to ask my engineering friends, let me know!

Thanks.that was really helpful

Have you heard back from the honors college regarding your decision?

Hey.I just got a room in talkington but my roommate is not a freshmen.I am also applying for honors college. So if I do get accepted, should I take a room in Gordon, Murray or Talkington. I want to make friends easily, so what do you think I should do?

From what I have experienced, seen, and heard this year, Talkington isn’t very social. I have a few friends there that say they don’t associate with people in the dorm much and there isn’t many dorm activities. The commons has good food, but is the most overpriced place on campus. It is a really nice dorm, but more upperclassman live there, making it less social. I have a bunch of freshman honors friends in Gordon, and they absolutely love it. Many of them are going to continue to stay there next year. Most people there are freshman, so it is very social and there is always activities. HON (an honors college social/community service organization) holds things at Gordon all the time. Although the rooms aren’t as nice as Murray or Talkington, everyone seems to enjoy the atmosphere there. The food place isn’t the best, but it’s tolerable. Murray is pretty social on my floor, but I had a lot of freshman so it could vary. Murray holds a lot of events as well, and I have met a lot of people. I really like it, but it’s all personal preference. I don’t think you would have a problem making friends at all, and the rooms are fairly nice. I like the food place downstairs. The Murray study lounges also get a lot of use, and it definitely has a more quiet atmosphere than Gordon does at night. People in Gordon tend to throw “parties”, whereas people in Murray go elsewhere to do that. I would say pick Gordon or Murray, but none are bad options. All three are a thousand times better than the other campus dorms.

Thanks.Your really helpful.I am supposed to get my decision this week.Hoping to get in.If you do not mind, would you send me your email address at chetriananda (@) gmail (.) com. As I am an international student, I have like a million questions.

Is the Honors designation a generic one, like for core classes only, or is there a specific Honors for certain majors, such as Honors for History such as what UT Austin has?

It’s a generic one, but they offer all types of classes for all majors and interests. Not just core requirements, but fun electives too such as a zombie class, superhero class, etc.
