Hi! I’m considering WVU as one of my safeties because of the fact that my stats would get me into the nursing program direct entry as well as acceptance to the honors college. What is the honors program like? Is there honors housing? How hard is it to get into the nursing program with me being out of state with a 3.75 gpa and 1800 sat(1180 CR+M)? Would my stats being slightly above average put me in a better position to get into the program or would they still consider in state students first? Also, most other schools I’m applying to say their nursing program has only an average of 60-150 spots, is this the same at WVU?
Thanks!
My daughter is OOS and she has been accepted into their nursing program. Her GPA is a 4.0 and 1190 CR+M. She was asked to join the Honors college. We are from PA and the cost with scholarships is less than our Flagship school. They will also increase scholarship merit money with improved SAT scores. You should be selected for one of the direct admission spots. There is honors housing, but limited space. First deposits get the spots. Just FYI, West Virginia has a 100% pass rate for the nursing test (2014). 2015 results not available yet.
I actually just got accepted! I was wondering what the difference between the clinicals I would be doing at most universities versus the rural clinicals that wvu requires. Are the clinicals still done in a traditional hospital setting? I ask because I’m also considering VCU which has a level one trauma center as their clinical site. Does the clinical setting make a real difference in learning?
I believe that WVU also has a level one trauma center. There program has about 160 students. About half are direct admit. The other half must do 4 1/2 years. They cannot start their nursing classes until the spring of Soph. year (but they must have a high GPA to advance). I know that you must do a rural clinical rotation, but I believe it is in addition to the standard clinical rotations. As for honors housing, we didn’t look at those. Most students get apartments after their first year. They are very reasonable and right next to the dorm building. You can still take the buses and WVU tram system.
