I’m a high school senior currently deciding between the Honors College at USC, and the University of Virginia- both in-state tuition. Both campuses are very aesthetic, and both have active social scenes, which is another reason (aside from academics) why this choice is so tough. I hope to major in either a Pre-Med or Business track (vague and trite, I know), but I am not fully clear on the opportunities I would get from the Honors College. Aside from some on campus preferential treatment, does anyone know of job opportunities that the students might see as a result of their degree, and how they might compare to opportunities from somewhere like the University of Virginia?
I had the same choice years ago and selected USC. The big differences in my estimation is the personal attention and the peer group. The Honors College gives you a second adviser (in addition to your adviser at your major college) that helps chart out your path at USC, to include coursework, relevant extracurriculars, fellowships and grants, research, study abroad, etc. For someone that is not 100% clear on your direction, this may be very helpful. Being in the Honors College also gives students a sense of confidence. The smaller cohort means that you will become much closer to people who are similarly high achieving. I found that all of my friends ended up running clubs, fraternities, student media outlets, student government- there is an expectation of excellence. Whether you end up in business, med school, or something else, the strong resume you develop will help you stand out.
UVA has a great name and that should not be discounted, but I felt that I would not be able to stand out as much since so many of the students were from NoVA and grew up in a hyper competitive culture. I am sure you would do either school, but may find more opportunity at USC.
