Honors College

I just got “accepted” to the honors program at BC. I open the envelope to see “Welcome to the Honors Program at Boston College,” and told me that I was among the top 5% of applicants. However, as I read on in a little mini brochure it says “about 135 students are eventually accepted.” Now, I don’t know exactly how many kids apply to BC but I’m pretty sure 5% does not equal 135 students. Is it because kids go somewhere else? Is it only for kids who did EA? Anyone know?

I mean just think about it. The yield rate for BC is probably not too high as it isn't that prestigious. So yes it appears to be correct.

Congratulations Heybucs! thats wonderful news for you.

Given atomicfusion mentioned BC isnt that prestigious are you meaning in comparison to ivy league on in general?

Is BC a recognised and respected name? or is it more of a boutique uni?

Sorry, i realise this must sound like an obvious question to you. Its just that I am from another country so am unsure of its name strength.

Well BC is a good school. It's ranked around 40th or so in the nation, but the name "Boston College" doesn't impact people as much as "harvard, yale, princeton, stanford etc etc."

"Nearly 24,000 candidates honored Boston College with applications for 2,250 openings in our freshman class. We admitted 31% of them."

So 7440 applicants were admitted. 2,250 ended up going. So that means a 30% yield.

congrats heybucs! mind sharing some stats about yourself?

5% of 24,000 applicants is 1,200. What they mean is the top 5% of admitted students, about 112. The 135 they are getting usually doesn't include people that choose not to attend because Admissions has already identified backups to enter the Honors Program if they don't attend (if you got 4 years of housing but were not invited to the Honors Program and are not in Nursing, Education, or a Scholarship Athelete then you have a good chance of being in this pool). After or during Freshman year a few (i.e. 20) people will be invited to join based on their BC grades. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the clarification atomicfusion. Its hard when you only have the web sites to go on. Every school says its wonderful heh.

Although Boston College may not be as prestigious as say Harvard, yale, Williams, etc. it has become a very popular school in the past decade or so because of its ideal location-- right outside Boston.

How much of a commute is it from Boston or where most off campus students live? I have read its 35-40mins and 20 mins.

Sorry to hijack the thread. I hope heybucs question has already been answerd.

I got into the Honors Program, too. Are you going to the Honors Day in Februray?

I am i think! :)
