Hi! So I’m a senior and I’m applying to one or two honors colleges within universities. I understand that there’s a slim chance of acceptance to these honors colleges, but it’s worth a shot.
I’m just confused about what exactly they look for when they’re picking students? High numbers? Good honors essays? I feel like all the college pages just say “student excellence” and I don’t know what that means! Is the admissions process the same as being accepted to the regular university?
The numbers these people usually see are close the same. High numbers. If you’re activities look great too, that’s a bonus. But really the essay is your big chance to stand out. A lot of student look the same on paper. Letters of recommendation will also help you, if they demonstrate high-achievements. It’s totally worth a shot. Your essay can do a lot to shape the way the readers perceive you and get your application shifted over to the “yes” pile.
@blprof so how would I prove to them that I take initiative and that I’m creative? Just through my essays? Bc some of these colleges don’t ask for elaborate essays…
Yes, through your essays mainly. Bur your course rigor will demonstrate your willingness to challenge yourself, and your extracurriculars should show something about your intellectual curiosity. They want to see people who enjoy learning for learning’s sake, rather than just a focus on grades/test scores.
