Honors Housing Moving?

My son is on the FB group University of Pittsburgh Class of 2015.

<a href="http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=583064441&ref=ts#!/group.php?gid=119142317005&v=wall%5B/url%5D">http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=583064441&ref=ts#!/group.php?gid=119142317005&v=wall</a></p>

Someone posted on the wall "visited Pitt this weekend and just in case anyone was considering living in the honors dorms, they are probably going to be moving them to Sutherland. "

Has anyone else heard about this?

It isn’t indicated anywhere on Pitt’s site that I could find. However, it would be nice if they would consolidate all honors housing and have everyone in one. Forbes Craig isn’t the greatest facility because it is noisy. I will have to ask DD what she has heard.

I’m also sending a note to the housing office to see what they say…

Thanks. Keep us posted!

Here is the reply to my email:
Thanks for contacting Panther Central! I have not heard of this rumor of Honors housing moving to Sutherland. As far as I have been told Honors Housing will still be at Forbes.
If you have any other questions feel free to contact Panther Central!
Thanks,

I’ll aske the question when we visit in March

My daughter lived in Forbes and Forbes-Craig and liked them both quite well. In Forbes-Craig she had her own room and bathroom. The kitchen was certainly small but the living areas were of a nice size. Moving into Forbes-Craig was like a dream come true.

I know a resident assistant in Forbes hall–according to her, Pitt is (at least considering) moving the freshman honors housing to Sutherland (to accommodate more people, it seems). She thought having the mix of athletes and honors ‘nerds’ would make for an interesting dynamic in the building.

I emailed panther central and this was their response:

Dear Jessie,

Thanks for contacting Panther Central! Yes, this is correct Sutherland West Wing Hall will be honors housing. The East wing will be regular housing.

If you have any other questions feel free to contact Panther Central!

Thanks,

Panther Central

guess they’re moving some people into west and leaving east for everyone else!

Too funny, must be when I sent my note the memo hadn’t gone out yet. Thanks for posting. We’ll have to check out Sutherland (as much as they let us) when we visit in March.

Hmmmm. Wonder if that means that housing will be available there for upperclassmen as well. Funny how quickly things change. Maybe you gave them the idea, TitanMom!

My daughter did live in Sutherland freshman year. It is nice enough. There is a workout room and study rooms on the lower levels. Most of the rooms are in suites, so the kids are in six or eight-person suites and they share bathrooms, which they also get to clean. The floors have common rooms where they can gather to watch TV or do whatever college students do. There is also a place to eat and a coffee bar.

The suite she was in had closets in the hall and cabinets under the sinks for storage. The rooms had a nice closet and dressers that would fit under the beds if the bed was on the highest adjustment.

Thanks MD Mom. How was the noise from the street? It seems like the location would be quieter from a street noise point of view.

Hope its true, just cause the sutherland dorm has a food court, and forbes doesn’t, lmao.

TitanMom, Sutherland is up the hill with very little street noise, so any noise will be locally generated. DD found Sutherland noisy, but she was in a learning community (her poor choice), not honors freshman year, and her suitemates were very social.

Sutherland is also surrounded by frat houses, but I did not hear noise complaints about that. DD was on the lowest floor in Sutherland as well.

Any thoughts on how/why Sutherland might be better for Honors College students (aside from having an in-house eaterie)? I have not visited Pitt yet – D & I will be visiting in late March – but from the map it looks like Sutherland is the dorm that is the absolute farthest from the Cathedral of Learning, the library, and the academic buildings.

How are Honors College students supposed to be benefitted by a closer proximity to athletic facilities and fraternaties? Is this an intentional move to lessen the privileges associated with the Honors College? :(

Sutherland is in a lot quieter part of campus, much more “suburban,” compared to Forbes and the rest of the dorms.

Sutherland is beautiful, but my daughter never wanted to live up there because of the distance from lower campus. It’s quite a hike up the hill. On the plus side: It’s good exercise!

I am a freshman at Pitt currently living in Forbes Hall and had the opportunity to talk to my advisor about the freshman honors housing move. The reason they are moving honors housing is because they were having so many freshman apply to live there in recent years that they had to turn increasing numbers down. This way there is more space to house honors students that want to live in the honors community. It is only meant to benefit the students. Sutherland is also a nice dorm, and much newer than forbes. Although it may be farther from lower campus, it does have its own facilities. So, for example, although it may be a twelve minute hike from market central as opposed to five from Forbes, it doesn’t matter, Sutherland has its own dining hall!

Thanks mondaysun for the info. How have you liked Pitt and honors housing so far in general?

Thanks, mondaysun!

Also on the honors housing theme – do many Honors College students stay in honors housing beyond freshman year? If not, is this because of lack of space in honors housing, or because many choose other housing arrangements?

^I believe there is a different honors dorm for sophomores and above. The honors housing we’re talking about is only for freshman.
