Ahhh! What is the honors dorm for non-freshman? Is honors housing a popular option for non-freshman?

I believe Forbes-Craig apartments is the honor housing for sophomores and juniors.

A bus runs by Sutherland so students can take the bus if they are in a hurry or just don’t feel like walking.

Forbes Craig is the honors housing for upperclassmen, but according to DD who lives there now, it is in no way guaranteed for both sophomore and junior year. I was kind of hoping that the move to Sutherland would include upperclassmen.

Interesting! So is the general feeling that most (many?) honors students like honors housing, and would choose to continue in it if enough space were available?

I think that the general idea is that on-campus housing is pricey and many kids choose to move off if they have a group they want to move with. Today, it is increasingly complicated to rent places together–and find people you trust–and staying on campus in a city has some benefits. If your deadbeat roommate doesn’t pay on campus, for example, it isn’t your problem (just an example, not personal experience).

My daughter is an introvert and staying on campus would be a great option for her. She, however, wants to be able to cook (which she can in Forbes Craig where she has a single bedroom in a two-bedroom apartment), and it is tough to find that combination. She also wants her own bedroom. She will probably be moving to an efficiency apartment in the fall.

Thanks, MD Mom. Is staying in Forbes Craig next year not an option for your D because housing is limited? Or is it even possible that an off-campus efficiency would be cheaper…

My daughter currently lives in Forbes and loves it, but she said she didn’t want to live in Forbes Craig next year. So, my daughter and two of her Forbes friends are going to try their luck at the housing lottery. I only hope they don’t regret NOT applying for Forbes Craig.

My son also loves Forbes, but is not going to apply to Forbes Craig. He and his friends are taking their chances in the lottery and hoping for a suite in the Quad.

When he heard they were moving to Sutherland he was happy he was there this year in Forbes.

D2 and her roommate loved Forbes Hall their freshman year. They had a huge room in the “midget” wing. Neither of them wanted to move to Forbes Craig the next year. The most commonly expressed opinions on Forbes Craig was that the apartments were small, noisy and somewhat remote. Oh, and they had no air conditioning.

Instead D2, roommate and three friends got a five-person suite in Panther Hall up on the upper campus (pretty much right across the street from Sutherland), which is the newest dorm building on campus (as of now). Again, a very nice living arrangement. The suite did not have a full kitchen, but it was close.

This school year, four of the five moved into the Bouquet Street Aparments, which is, yet again, a newish, very nicely set up apartment. Unfortunately, the three-year guarantee comes to an end this year and so the gang (all of whom met up originally in Forbes Hall) is moving to an off-campus apartment next year. (For which they already have a lease - signed the first week of February - takes effect in August.)

Sutherland is a nice dorm building, but I think the setup at Forbes is great for bringing the kids together.

Walking Tessie–my daughter has the impression that it is not an option for her to stay in Forbes Craig and she thinks it is too noisy anyway. She seems to think that students get it one year (sophomore or junior). I do not know whether that is an accurate perception. However, she really is a live alone kind of kid and many of the friends she has made who could be potential roommates are studying abroad next year and she is not interested in staying with the current apartment mate who was a random roommate pairing for this year.

Ruskin Hall is very nice, but it’s hard to get a single there.

Everyone I’ve met here is really glad they’ve joined honors housing. It’s a really good atmosphere for freshman students because there’s a lot of really cool and interesting people here, lots of space for studying, and plenty to do. However, I know people who are really happy living in Towers and Sutherland so if you’re child wants to go that route because they feel that’s a better fit for them they should be encouraged!
Most people that live here don’t end up applying for Forbes Craig. As I said, the freshman honors community has a great atmosphere for us newbies, but after this first year a lot of us are ready to move on and meet a greater variety of the student body.

I agree, mondaysun! I also live in Forbes Hall and I have had a great experience thus far. It’s a great place for freshman!

Which floor are you on heartmoonstar?

I’m on the third floor, you?

I’m on 3rd floor too!! Which room are you??

320!!! you?

Ahhhhhh! Hi roommate!!!

^^^Funny! ^^^^^

I’ve been torn between staying in Honors dorms and towers. I feel like living in Honors would keep me more focused and in a better place compared to towers. I’m afraid I differ from most honors kids in the fact that I’ve been “going out” all of high school, and don’t want to have to “babysit” anyone who decides freshman year of college is the perfect time to start drinking, and I certainly don’t want to be surrounded by people who never want to go out. (My opinion is weekdays are all about school and weekends are for fun…unless there are big exams and projects, of course). I guess what I’m saying is I want to be able to have a mix of intelectual peers and fun people to go out with. I want to live in Honors but I’m afraid people will be too “stiff” … are there any current pitt honor students who could comment on this for me? I’m really torn :/
