Honors Housing -- room type choices?

What are the room type choices available to Honors freshmen living in Honors housing?

When we were there we saw a "private double" (double room with its own bath) and "suite double" (two double rooms sharing a bath between them. Are there also "private single" and "suite single" rooms available in that dorm, and are they available to freshmen or only upperclassmen?

The choices for incoming freshmen are private double and suite double. The cost is based on number of people per bathroom, so the private double is more expensive. They say that most kids request a suite double but that not all get it because there aren’t enough for all those who picked it. That was the case with my son. He had requested a suite double but was assigned to a private double, and we were charged the higher price. (I did fill out a request form to get the difference waived since he was essentially forced into the more expensive option, but it wasn’t approved.) It’s a very nice room, and they’re a bit spoiled to get such a nice room as freshmen. It has a small foyer area (with their dressers and the sink) with the bathroom off that to one side and then the main bedroom off to another. Much to my husband’s chagrin, DS and his best friend went with a private double for next year. I don’t know how hard it is to get a single since DS didn’t have any interest and didn’t mention anyone he knows getting one.

My understanding is that if there are medical needs, a single can be requested for an incoming freshman.

My daughter was also assigned a private double when we had requested a suite double. This year, as a sophomore, she has a single within a suite. Because she shares two bathrooms with the other suite residents, her single is slightly less expensive than last year’s double, even with increased room rates.

How many total residents in that suite, @Vermontmomof2? Is that still in the honors dorm? Are the freshmen typically on separate floors from upperclassmen?

Hi MathMomVT,

We toured the honors dorms on ASD and were told there are two types of dorm rooms for freshman. The private double or two double rooms with a shared bath connecting the two rooms. The suites are not for freshman. I believe all freshman live on the same floor. Co-Ed - boys on one side of the hall - girls on the other. The suites are not for Freshmen.

I think my daughter’s suite has 7 residents in all, and is not for freshmen. Like most students, she is moving off campus to share a house with friends next year.

^^^I would imagine that living off campus is cheaper?

It all depends on the housing situation. In my daughter’s case, I suspect it will all even out to about what we currently pay. However, they will all have their own rooms. In a room sharing situation, I think it would be quite a bit cheaper.

Does anyone know why Juniors and Seniors tend to move off campus? I don’t understand why this is so prevalent at UVM. Is there some kind of on campus housing shortage that pushes them out? Or something else?

Virtually every college we visited we were told the juniors and seniors tended to move off campus, even when housing is guaranteed for all 4 years. Often for cheaper housing, or for private bedrooms, or because they want to stop eating cafeteria food, or just because it’s what everyone else is doing. As the parent of a Junior at a different college, moving off campus has been a nice transitional step toward the “real world” that they’ll be entering soon!

I agree with mathmomvt. Living in a house or apartment and having to budget and figure out meals is a great transitional step toward life after college. I don’t think my daughter has felt forced out of the dorms at all, but is ready to live in a house and prepare her own food with her friends. Additionally, she is looking forward to living with girls from her sports team who will have the same schedule and need to get to bed relatively early. The HC housing has been great these past two years, though.

So… can incoming freshmen wait until after June orientation to apply for housing, in case they meet someone they;d like to room with? The honors freshmen are guaranteed a place in the honors dorm, so it seems like there’d be no particular rush. I only see something saying that the application will be “available” mid-May, but nothing that says when it’s due.
