Honors Housing?

While i would like to know about UF honors housing i would also love some feedback on honors housing in general. Would i be cut off from the rest of the student body? Are the rules very strict? Mostly i would like to know if ill have fun or if it is all work and no play.

You wouldn’t be cut off from the rest of the student body, unless you chose to cut yourself off. If there’s rules, I was never aware of them. Our RA was extremely chill, never heard of anybody getting in trouble (except one time we had to move into the common room to party, cause like 30 of us in a dorm was a fire hazard). Did I like everyone? No, some of them were extremely anti-social weirdos, some of the people on my floor were chill, but that’s probably true of any dorm.

They’re the nicest dorms, so at least you won’t be living in a dungeon.

their living policies are exactly the same as other dorms. the only unique thing about them is that all the residents are in the honors program, and they building is nice.

Hey, I’m looking into honors housing too :D

My friend says that Hume’s been a good experience (the people on his floor were quite sociable) and the people there are pretty mixed - you might get stuck with a gaming nerd maybe or a study hard or someone like him who likes spending his weekend nights out if possible. He also suggests that you look up any potential roommates on Facebook to check their likes to make sure they’re not crazy, but I guess that applies to any situation, honors dorm or not, haha.

The dorms are much, much nicer than any other on campus. Plus, they’re right in the middle of campus, so no, you won’t be cut off from the rest of the student body.

Middle of campus doesn’t mean much, they’re not near many of the academic buildings. That’s one of the drawbacks, it’s a minor trek to many of your classes.

Thanks for the info, ill look into it :)

Honors housing is newer and nicer but is a trek from most freshman classes. Also, some of the honors kids can be a bit excentric or quirky. However, it seems that on any floor there are some kids that are bound to be just fine.

yeah i don’t mean to be stereotypical but i just don’t want to be stuck with a roommate or group of people who are way too into school and not at all in to letting loose and having fun.

^ Could be a good thing. Never have to worry about throwing a party or bringing people home or have to deal with bulls**t or anything like that.

How much farther is it from Hume to academic classes compared to the regular freshman dorms (like Jennings and Rawlings)? I really like what Hume has to offer but the distance worries me :(

Hume’s close to the Physics/Engineering buildings

It depends on which building you’re trying to get to, really. For most your classes, you’ll have to walk maybe 10 minutes. You can look it up on campusmap.ufl.edu

Some of the buildings you’re likely to have class in are Little (the math building), Turlington (The major liberal arts building). I had a psych class in NEB (the engineering building). Then obvs the physics and chem buildings. Look at where they are, you’ll get a feel for what’s a walk and what isn’t that bad. Turlington is probably the heart of the “academic” campus.

^Thank you! That map was really helpful

Does anyone know how the housing advance payment ($200) works for honors housing? Basically I’m not sure if I’m going to attend UF since I won’t find out if I got in anywhere else until April so I don’t want to spend the $200 right now, so if I miss the March deadline, would I still be able to live in honors housing in the fall if I attended or would I just be deferred to the general pool of deadline-missers?

Yes, the deposit works for Hume. We were told at an Honors weekend session at UF that, if you invited to apply for the Honors program and you want to live in Hume, you should select Hume as your first choice of housing, even though you aren’t accepted to the program yet.

I’ve been reading around about Hume, and it seems that though all dorms are very mixed, Hume has the highest concentration of anti-social kids. I was wondering, from any past experience you might have, how big of a deal is it if you get paired with one of these stereotypical students? Does that inhibit your social life much?
