some background - im a rising sophomore currently in alg 2. i got a b last semester, and currently have an a.
should i take honors precalc? ive been debating about this for a while, but i can’t see my counselor until after course selection is due, so i thought i’d ask here. i do feel confident in the concepts we’ve learned in math this year, but since i did get a b i’m hesitant to sign up. i like math so that’s not a problem lol. any advice from people who have taken it previously? are there any particular things that helped that i should look into?
Have you asked your teacher? He/she would know better than anyone, even your counselor.
Are you in honors Alg 2 or regular?
What does your teacher say?
Im in regular, the only honors math class offered is precalc. She said it depends from person to person, and I should sign up for it and drop it after the first few weeks if it doesn’t work out. I’m not sure if I want to do that, though, because sometimes the counselors don’t approve requests to drop and people are stuck in higher levels of classes
Have you done trig yet? How well did you do on it? I’m currently taking pre-calc, and so far, the only concepts from algebra or geometry that I’ve really used directly(not counting basic stuff) was trig. From what I’ve seen so far, we’ve been doing a lot of stuff with graphs and reading/transforming them, trigonometry, and solving equations, which are all stuff you’re probably already doing, so seeing how well you did on those might help you decide, but like what the other two posters said, your teacher probably knows better than anyone, especially since a lot of times, the course difficulty varies a lot based on your teacher.
While it is difficult to drop at your school as you mentioned, it certainly is a lot easier to drop to a lower level than to move up a level if it’s too easy.
IMO, PreCalc is a reiteration of Algebra 2. The concepts are very similar, other than Trig, and it’s almost like Algebra 2 but more in depth and adding trigonometry. Khan Academy is soooo helpful in learning new topics and practicing your skills!
If you want to go into a STEM field, I’d go with Honors.
Go with Honors. If your first graded are in the F-C range, drop don a level. If you get B- and higher, keep at it. It’ll show rigor, it’ll prepare you for calculus and college courses, and it’ll keep more options open.
What other classes would you be taking?
We haven’t done trig yet, my teacher is a bit behind the others. I did well in trig in geometry but that’s probably way different than in precalc
@MYOS1634 I’m planning on taking honors chem and ap world at the same time
So
Precalculus Honors
AP world
Honors Chem
English class = ?
Foreign language= ?
Art, technology =?
Sorry, i thought you only meant honors/aps for some reason lol! Im taking English, Spanish 3 and pe, no art/tech until junior and senior year because I can only take 6 classes and pe is required. Honors English isn’t offered and honors Spanish is only offered for Spanish 4
Ok, that’s a balanced schedule.
Check that it’ll be possible for you to drop and under what conditions (deadline, etc).
Talk with your teacher again. What grade do regular algebra students who are successful in precalculus honors tend to have?
What major are you thinking of? If business, science, or technology, then precalculus honors is the best choice.
My teacher has only taught alg2 this year, but she said based on what the other teachers have said students with anything lower than a’s second semester don’t tend to do well in h precalc, but not to worry abt first semester grades because not much of the content taught then is relevant later on (review of alg 1).
I have no idea what i want to go into…i was thinking maybe something with humanities, but some stem fields also interest me, so I want to make sure I’m not weak in any area so I can keep my options open later on when I do decide
