Honors + PreMed questions for a current student

Hey guys,

I visited OSU this past week and pretty much fell in love. It wasn’t my top choice before, but it is now. I loved the school spirit! I had a couple questions that I was hoping current students could answer.
Any Pre-Meds, I was wondering how the Pre-Med program is. I was accepted to Upitt, which is my second choice at the moment, and I know they have a spectacular program for Pre-Meds due to having UPMC on campus and the program is very rigorous and gets students into top med schools (Harvard, UCSF, etc), and I guess I was wondering if the same is true for OSU, in terms of where pre-meds tend to matriculate to. I was also wondering what the general experience as PreMed at Ohio State is, are there a lot of opportunities for research, publications, kind professors? I want to maintain a high GPA in college and hopefully shoot for a medical school outside of Ohio, so if anyone had information that students have about people they’ve known or their own personal experience would be really great in helping me choose between the two.
I was also not accepted to the Honors Program at Ohio State, I had the ACT and GPA requirement but not the class rank and therefore was not accepted. I was wondering if the Honors Program is really important to the OSU experience? I’m looking to be around highly motivated students who take their academics seriously. I was invited to apply for Scholars but I wasn’t thinking about OSU at the time and didn’t apply, so I was wondering how much that’s going to hold me back. I know Honors Students get priority scheduling, but is it really that hard to get into the classes you want as a non-honors student? That’s another thing I’m concerned about at such a big school, is it really hard to get the classes that you want?

I would appreciate any help that you guys can provide!

Are you expecting there to be an actual program for pre-med students? Like a major?

I don’t think there is such a thing, but there is a pre-health advising program, which may help you figure out your options:

[Pre-Health Advising Program | PreHealth](http://prehealth.osu.edu/)

Of my friends here who are pre-med, a few are majoring in one or more of the sciences (chemistry, biology, and microbiology I believe), and one was admitted to the biomedical science program.

They all take the same classes to fulfill the pre-reqs for med school, but there is room in their schedules for other classes. You would be able to meet with advising staff whenever you need to plan out your schedule.

If you wanted to know how some of the OSU professors are, you could check out rate my professor. Some of the reviews for science and math professors are low simply because of the difficulty of the material.

I am in honors, as are my pre-med friends, and it does help with scheduling. You can usually get into a given class without being in honors, but the classes at the best times and with the best professors are usually maxed out somewhat quickly.

Some classes are only offered at one or two times, and I have been shut out of a class or two, even with early scheduling. I’ve never had this happen with a class I needed for my major, since more than enough seats are usually offered.
