Honors Program Questions!

Is the Honors Program competitive? Is it hard to get As? Are the people pretentious? Is the Honors Program worth going to UDel? Tell me anything you know!

I would like to know the answer to all these questions as well!

my daughter is a senior in the honors program. Some classes are add-ons to regular classes (extra requirements than the other students, some are stand-alone. If you are accepted to the honors program, and you study, you should be able to get A’s. The students are not any more pretentious than other students. There are all types who are in the honors program. All the honors kids live together the first year, so you will make friends who have the same values as you do. The honors program is absolutely worth it. It adds value to your degree when looking for jobs.

“There are all types who are in the honors program.”

Agreed. Daughter is a frosh this year (Class of 2019) and I think has seen there is a fairly wide range (academically, socio-economically, etc.) of students who are in the program.

As for whether it’s “worth it”, I’d say that if UD is strong in a major you are interested in (like Chem, Engineering, or Nursing…to name just a few), and you get into the Honors program, it’s totally worth it. The honors dorm is pretty swanky, especially compared to what I had to live in back in the day. For a data point, Daughter chose UD Honors program over Carnegie Mellon Eng. School.

@SevenDad thanks for your input! What made your daughter pick UD Honors over schools like Carnegie?

@laughandlearn23: Many factors went into her decision, but I’d say the top 2 reasons were UD’s Top 10 Chem E program and her receiving a significant scholarship (see other recent thread on “Full Ride” scholarships).

Agree with amassmom. My son is a junior in the honors program. The smaller class sizes alone make it worthwhile, especially freshman year. The new freshman dorms are great and right next to the dining hall, plus the honors program provides many opportunities to get out and meet fellow honors students (trips, free tickets to events, ice cream on the porch, etc.) It also helps your resume :-).
