Honors Program required freshmen housing?

I got into Northeastern RD for mechanical engineering. I originally got a 22k connections scholarship, then a 27k national merit scholarship that replaced it; I felt like I was really close to getting into the Honors Program so I emailed honors admissions and asked if I could appeal. They gave me a link to an honors program waitlist and I filled it out. I was told I’d be notified by May 1st-- but they sent something on may 1st saying they’d tell me later. Knowing roommate preferences were due may 8th, I found a roommate not in honors and I really liked her. Today, May 7th, they tell me I got in. Now it seems like I have to room in the honors dorms! What am I supposed to do? Because they told me so late I already agreed to be someone’s roommate. If I accept, I’m ditching my roommate a day before the deadline and I have to find someone new fast or deal with a random roommate. I really don’t want to do that. Is it really required for me to stay in the honors dorm? Is it worth it to accept? I’m sort of leaning towards declining…

It’s really up to you here!

Honors is not a significant difference academically, and the perks of the housing only last the first two years, and is really only significantly different the first year. I think there’s also the global experience fund perk as well, so if that’s a draw it could be a bigger consideration.

That said, people go with random roommates all the time, this isn’t going to screw over your roommate in terms of quality of housing or anything like that. I wouldn’t let this hold you back if there’s a reason you want honors besides just to be in it. It’s not ideal but they will be just fine.

Thank you! After sort of arguing with the honors people and getting nowhere, I decided to decline the offer. The perks are nice but I wouldn’t get much more of a scholarship anyway and don’t really care about the global fund. I’ll just reapply later with my roommate if I want to be in the program. Your response helped a lot!
