Sorry for the stupid question but i was admitted to McGill for the coming fall and am trying to find out - What is "the honors program" of each faculty? as if what does it mean? and how do I apply? (new in canada:-)

also... would you guys recommend to start with only 4 courses on first semester, or 5 is fine ? i don't wanna over do it

Five is fine. I would suggest you spread it out over the course of the entire week as opposed to compressing as many classes as you can in one day though. People who do that tend to get overwhelmed with the amount of work they have to do.

Honours is basically winning extra points for grad schools or professional schools by doing more courses (or in some cases more difficult courses) than the required major.

A regular Economics major for instance requires that you take 36 credits in Economics.

An Honours in Economics requires you take the special (more difficult) Econ honours courses plus Linear Algebra 1, Calculus 1 and 2 finishing those classes with at least a C+ and maintaining an overall GPA of 3.2.

Thanks for your reply it's been very helpfull.
so i assume your faculty decides whether you qualify for an honors in your major... usually on the second year? or a decision is made on the first year?

It varies from department to department. Econ Honours for instance (you can tell what I want to get into obviously) requires a lot less credits than other other programs (36 compared to as much as 60 in some cases). And yes, you usually do the honours thing in the second year or first if you're a U1 student already.
